Grosse Pointe Woods is a suburban community that’s packed with picturesque parks, superb schools and rows and rows of gorgeous old homes. It’s also just a short walk to marinas and parks at the water’s edge of Lake St. Clair. “There are a lot of starter homes here, and the housing stock is generally smaller than the surrounding neighborhoods. It’s very attractive for young families,” says Realtor Jim Saros, vice president of Jim Saros Real Estate Services, well-established local realtor and area resident.
Grosse Pointe Woods shares a small border with Detroit and is an easy commute to the city.

Homes with more room to garden
This leafy residential district is rich with lush landscaping and mature trees that flourish in spring and summer. Here, you’ll find homes dating back to the early and mid-1900s, including cozy ranch homes, modest brick cottages and some larger Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Craftsman homes. Many of these dwellings have been well maintained by their owners over the years. Lot sizes are typically smaller than those in neighboring Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Farms, but you’ll still have plenty of room for gardening in the front and back yard. Home prices typically range from around $200,000 to $500,000 for smaller homes, while larger homes can sell for upwards of $600,000.

Baseball at Ghesquiere Park
Parks and recreational amenities are a major perk for residents of this community. You can enjoy the outdoors at Ghesquiere Park, a 32-acre greenspace with baseball diamonds, athletic fields and a playground nestled amid stands of leafy trees. In the wintertime, you can bundle up and head to the park's outdoor skating rink. The park is bordered by the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center, a public space that offers adult and youth programming and social activities. Residents can also take advantage of small parks tucked away on residential streets like Chene-Trombly Park, Jules De Porre Park and Sweeney Park. For a round of golf, make sure you check out the rolling fairways and greens at the Lochmoor Club and the Country Club of Detroit.

Accolades for Grosse Pointe North High
Students can attend superb local schools like John Monteith Elementary School, Parcells Middle School and Grosse Pointe North High School, all of which hold A ratings from Niche, an online school review site. “Schools are the number one draw for every Grosse Pointe neighborhood,” Saros says. Grosse Pointe North High enrolls around 1,400 students every year and has been ranked among the best and most challenging schools in the country by news outlets like The Washington Post and Newsweek. For an alternative, students might consider private schools like University Liggett School, an independent, K-12 school and one of the oldest coeducational day schools in the state.
