Set apart from urban areas and engulfed in Iowa's vast rural spaces, Guthrie Center is a quaint and neighborly town positioned appropriately in the center of Guthrie County. Here, you'll find homes lined in rows, creating a suburban feel, along with high-ranking schools and a mixture of local shops. Access to natural spaces is abundant, with parks scattered throughout the city, as well as easy access to broader wilderness areas. Like a modern-day Green Acres, Guthrie Center appeals to that recent wave of Americans leaving urban centers in favor of the country life. It's the perfect spot for setting up a quiet life away from the noise, but there is enough of a community here that residents will by no means feel isolated.

Home styles are diverse in Guthrie Center. While some homes date back to the early twentieth century, others were constructed more recently. Homebuyers choose from a selection of bungalows with an older charm, while ranch styles and colonials are also available for more traditional designs. The area is known as more of a seller’s market and the average home sale price is around $200,000.

Creating a sense of togetherness at an early age, students between pre-k and sixth grade attend Guthrie Center Elementary School. Afterward, junior high students between grades seven and eight attend Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center Junior High School. Featuring four baseball diamonds and a football field on its grounds, Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center High offers opportunities for students to participate in sports, with each game only adding to the city’s emphasis on building community.

Locals congregate in the center of town at the intersection of State Street and 5th Street. Featuring smaller convenience chains and gas stations, as well as a Dollar General location, Guthrie Center makes sure each resident can access what they need to get through the week. Just a few minutes west on State Street, Prime Time Restaurant is an unsuspecting location for excellent American dishes from steak to chicken tenders. Hometown Foods is also available in this region of Guthrie Center for anyone looking to cook for themselves. On the east side, Café on the Hill is a highly rated spot known for its hot beef sandwich.

Allowing residents to get the most out of the area’s rural charm, State Street makes it easy to escape on a joyride through the countryside. Guthrie Center Golf Course is a great spot to spend time just outside of the neighborhood’s central boundaries and is known for its well-kept fairways and challenging holes. On the neighborhood’s west side, Mitchell Park is a small spot with onsite tennis and basketball courts. On the same property, locals can cool off during the summer months at Guthrie Center Aquatic Center.

Every year towards the end of summer, the Guthrie County Fair brings together the community for a celebration of life in this rural region, as well as live music, a free carnival, rodeo, tractor pull, parade and plenty of opportunities to try delicious homemade dishes. Hosted on the city’s Guthrie County Fairgrounds, residents of Guthrie Center are so close they can walk.

Bringing together a variety of opportunities for recreation and everyday life amongst the rural layout of Iowa, Guthrie Center is a great location for settling down and enjoying the peace and quiet.

I grew up in Guthrie Center, I think that for me it was the best place to live. We were far enough away from the city that you got the homey and welcoming feeling of living in a small town in Iowa, but it was also close enough that if you needed to run to the city to get something you could do that within a couple hours. I think that it had a perfect mix of small town vibes yet it came with a lot to offer to the people who lived there.
