Coastal-living along the East River
Mathews is as far east you can go along the aptly named East River before encountering the Chesapeake Bay. It’s one of the many peninsulas jutting away from Gloucester, but it’s unique in two ways: first, it has Gwynn Island hovering around the north end, and second, New Point Comfort Lighthouse sits on the southern tip, near a nature preserve. Without a doubt, this is a coastal community with a secluded rural aspect, dotted with outdoor recreation opportunities. “There’s lots of acreage, but keep in mind that the tradeoff is you’ll have to drive to reach what’s considered a common amenity nowadays,” says David Tortolini, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “You’re not going wake up and just dip over to Starbucks.”
Cast-a-line or collect sea shells at Haven Beach
Two beaches on the east end attract a lot of attention. Haven Beach, as the name suggests, is a quiet place. There aren’t many big waves. Visitors show up to fish, collect shells and swim. The drive there is also part of the experience, with beach grasses that exceed the height of approaching cars. Bethel Beach is considered more of a scenic spot: locals prefer to watch the sunset here or listen to the lapping waves, rather than swim. The Bethel Beach Natural Preserve is attached, which also brings out birding enthusiasts. Another destination frequented by wildlife enthusiasts is the New Point Comfort Natural Area Preserve, which is in the path of migratory birds.
Gwynn's Island offers beachside homes with piers.

Traditional Colonials, Cape Cods and coastal cottages
Home prices range from the $300,000s up to $700,000. Colonial styles are prominent here, owing to the historic atmosphere pervading Mathews. It’s not uncommon to have multiple acres of land as part of the lot. Beachfront homes are frequently seen as well, given the amount of coastline in Mathews. These may have hints of Cape Cod style or pops of bold color like turquoise. Some outlying properties do reach into the million-dollar range, for those who want more of an estate lifestyle. It’s common for historic properties from the late 19th century to be the spotlight of such properties.
Cape Cod style homes are also common within Mathews.

As a free admission event, people of all ages come out to eat local food, enjoy live music and buy arts and crafts. In early December, the Mathews Historical Museum hosts the annual Christmas Bazaar, where local artisans are on hand to discuss their wares.
