A former mill town with a gingerbread castle, 55 miles from New York City
Hamburg attracts a lot of attention for an exurb that’s tucked 55 miles northwest of New York City. “Hamburg is small, only 1 or 2 square miles, but homes sell quickly there,” says George Perrone, a Realtor of over 35 years who’s with Century 21. Part of the fascination has to do with nearby recreation venues. “You can go down to Bridge Marina, get on a boat and pull up to a restaurant that way,” says Juliet Lopez, a real estate agent with Keller Williams. But another part of the fascination is local lore. Residents can stumble upon a former paper mill that operated along the Wallkill River and was strategically positioned close to a railroad. After the Railroad Age ended, the mill switched to processing wheat in the 1920s, and oddly enough, the owner tacked on an amusement park with gingerbread castle architecture. The abandoned castle has become a symbol of the community’s grit, with a residential strip now being named Gingerbread Castle Road. Many owners over the years have sought to preserve the site, changing it from a night club to a haunted house theme park.
Contemporary condos, plus split-level homes
Condos are a popular option in the area. One-bedroom and two-bedroom units are concentrated in the southeast corner and further north along Falcon Ridge Way. Buildings range from 1988 to 2008, so overall the look is cohesive and contemporary, with sidewalks tracking around small swaths of ornamental plantings. Complexes like Heritage Lakes have swimming areas, places to fish, tennis courts and a playground. Prices range from $150,000 to $250,000. Then multi-story two-bed townhouses and single-owner homes begin to appear. The townhouses can have driveways and attached garages, giving them a suburban sensibility that meshes well with the split-level single-owner homes here. The key difference is that these split-level homes can have up to four bedrooms and sweeping front lawns framed by mature trees, although townhouses will still have strips of grass out front. Prices range from $250,000 to $500,000.
Home buyers have condo options in parts of Hamburg, such as the community of Hamburg Village.
Split-level homes make up most of the single family properties in Hamburg.

Wallkill Valley Regional High has over a dozen sports to participate in
Students can start at the namesake Hamburg School, which is a kindergarten through eighth-grade institution that receives a B-minus from Niche. The school’s Greek Revival architecture is complemented by the townhouses on Kelburn Court, seen in the distance. There’s an 8-to-1 student-teacher ratio. Older students can attend Wallkill Valley Regional High, another school that receives a B-minus. There are many extracurriculars to participate in, from over a dozen athletic teams to clubs like Future Business Leaders of America.
Hamburg School serves about 250 students in grades K-8.
Hamburg teens can attend Wallkill Valley Regional High School just outside of town.

Bus stop on Hamburg Turnpike
Bus stops along the Hamburg Turnpike provide an accessible option for reaching the various eateries and small businesses here. This is the main mode of alternative transportation, since even though there are walkable residential stretches, Hamburg isn’t pedestrian-friendly on the whole – a car is required to traverse this neighborhood. New York City is about a 90-minute drive away, reachable via Interstate 80, which itself is about 20 miles south of Hamburg.
Shopping and dining along Hamburg Turnpike
Hamburg Turnpike brings plenty of eateries and shops to explore. At the intersection of Ames Boulevard and the turnpike, Cravin Thai serves curries and specialty drinks in an intimate setting. Across the street, Hamburg Antique Center has been selling curious finds for over 45 years. Dante’s Pizza and Hamburg Hot Bagels are farther south on the turnpike. Residents can continue driving 2 miles south into Franklin, where Walmart, Weis Markets and Shop Rite are clustered together, offering an abundance of grocery options within short distance.
Cravin Thai, in Hamburg, offers great south Asian cuisine in a cozy tavern-like setting.
The Hamburg Antique Center is two stories of relics and oddities in the heart of town.

Golf and swimming at Crystal Springs Resort
While the neighborhood only has Hamburg Park and Recreation Fields — good for Little League baseball, soccer and a playground — there are several outdoor destinations within short driving distance. Less than a mile away is Crystal Springs Resort, whose Wild Turkey Golf Club is known for its varied and scenic terrain. In the warm months, the pools and waterpark are popular, while in the winter visitors opt to go skiing. By going 15 miles south, residents can arrive at Lake Mohawk, another esteemed spot with golfing but based more around the water, whether that’s boating, fishing or strolls on the boardwalk dotted with Tudor-style buildings. Indoor entertainment is available too, like Sparta Lanes, which has over 30 lanes for bowling.
