Tranquil farmlands, except for weekends
Farmland stretches as far as the eye can see in Monroe Township. Shana Amsterdam, co-owner of Talking Breads farm bakery and mill, has found it to be a great place to open their bakery – “The neighborhood is great! The township has been super great to work with, the neighbors are so supportive, we’ll see then walking here and biking here to get bread.” Don’t be fooled by what seems like relative remoteness on the back roads – the bucolic landscape is only moments from busy towns and the state capital. “It’s 5 miles – maybe ten minutes to the middle of Mechanicsburg or Carlisle or Dillsburg, only 20 minutes to Harrisburg,” says Amsterdam. This convenience has led to increasing development, particularly towards the northern end of the community, as Harrisburg workers look for quiet, countryside options. Weekends during that summer, that quiet is often broken by the roar of sprint cars and modifieds as racers from across the country tear around Williams Grove Speedway.
Traditional housing blends into the agricultural surrounding
Traditional farmhouses on massive acreage dot the countryside where farmers toil in the fields early spring through late fall, kicking up dust late into the night. Small, informal hamlets like Allen and Brandtsville bring neighbors closer together and feature a mixture of late 1800s Colonial-revival farmhouses along with 20th century split-levels and ramblers. New Traditional homes, many of them custom homes from local construction groups, have cropped up around the edges of the township as Harrisburg continues to sprawl. Homes in the area sit in a wide range, with smaller homes on large parcels of land sitting in the $275,000 to $425,000 range. Modern builds, often sitting on a third of an acre or less, can sell for $450,000 to $525,000, while large custom-built estate houses topping 4,000 square feet can go for over $550,000, featuring gourmet kitchens, high ceilings, and luxurious master suites.
Cumberland Valley schools are great for athletes
Considered one of the top school districts for athletes in the state of Pennsylvania, Cumberland Valley School District serves all of Monroe Township. Students from the township will go to Monroe Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade, then on to Eagles View Middle School for sixth through eighth grade, both receiving a grade of A-minus from Niche. Cumberland Valley High School shines with an A rating from Niche, who also rates it as the second-best district for student athletes in Pennsylvania. Private schools in the region include Carlisle Christian Academy and Heritage Christian Academy.
It beats taking a tractor
A car is a must in Monroe Township, particularly in the rural depths of the countryside. With no town center to stop in, there’s no public transit through the region. The roads are fine for recreational bicycling, but it doesn’t work as a regular means of travel. UPMC Carlisle is the closest emergency medical treatment, 10 miles or further from most parts of Monroe, as much as a 25-minute drive. Harrisburg International Airport, the nearest airport offering national and international flights, is similarly distant – over 20 miles away, the trip can often take up to 30 minutes.
Farm-centric dining and groceries
Monroe Township still supports the farmers that have built the region. Oak Grove Farm has been feeding homes since 1963, providing an abundance of local products to the community, along with homemade pies and freshly picked fruit. Co-owner Bryan Lebo says, “The community is tremendously supportive. They’ve supported us over the years, and everyone looks out for each other.” Talking Breads offers old-world European breads, baked goods, and pantry needs to the community – residents enjoy a croissant and coffee while relaxing against the backdrop of the 26-acre farm. Amsterdam mentions that there is an active Community-Supported Agriculture system in Monroe Township as well, as residents buy directly from nearby producers. T.J. Rockwell’s has been a staple in the community since 1997, serving American cuisine and famous for their cheesy Rhino Fries. For large shopping trips, grocery stores like Giant in Dillsburg, as well as big retailers like Walmart and Target, are available just outside of the township.
Not too big for its Breeches
With much of the region still active farmland, Monroe Township doesn’t have much in the way of parks. Instead, many of the residents prefer the raw outdoors. White Rock Acres offers a scenic overlook of the valley, surrounded by State Game Lands used for hunting and fishing. “There’s trout fishing at Yellow Breeches Creek,” says Amsterdam, “And we go tubing there in the summer, like every weekend.” The creek runs directly through Monroe Township. Designated a “Pennsylvania Scenic River” it’s a popular spot for tubing, canoeing and fishing.
Steam-driven events year round
Amsterdam mentions Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association hosts the Williams Grove Farmers Flea Markets most Sundays throughout the year, featuring more than 500 vendors during the peak season. Events are held all year long, including the highly anticipated annual Steam Show, a week-long event full of tractor pulls, train rides, live music and much more.
Gentlemen, start your engines
Williams Grove Speedway can be quite the attraction as the season runs from March through October. “I love the sound of it, you can hear them at night, it’s the sound of my childhood!” says Amsterdam, chuckling. It’s a spectacle that draws locals and visitors alike as sprint and modified drivers from across the country compete on the red clay, often followed by fireworks. Some will make a weekend of it, with RVs posting up in the grass parking lots. Residents know to expect parades of car haulers and fans from Thursdays through Sunday, and traffic can be backed up for miles – if the World of Outlaws are in town, it can get even worse.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
