Historical pride is rooted in this Hampton neighborhood
As one of the oldest neighborhoods in the coastal city of Hampton, Virginia, Olde Hampton is where space exploration, Black history and maritime pride come together. Considered a town built by seafood, Hampton has several locally owned restaurants offering fresh catfish and shrimp dinners. Downtown Hampton is home to the Virigina Air & Space Science Center as well as the Hampton History Museum. Students attend schools within the Hampton City Public School District, graded an overall B on Niche, and is considered in the top-10 best school districts in the Norfolk area. The community gathers at the new Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center, and many homes are relatively affordable when compared to other Newport News neighborhoods.
Mary Jackson’s out-of-this-world legacy
Mary Jackson, whose story was highlighted in the book and movie “Hidden Figures,” was a notable member of the Olde Hampton neighborhood. The newly built Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center “is named for Mary Jackson, one of the first three black women who worked at NASA and created orbits that went around the Earth," says Sada Grey, the Youth Lead Program Leader at Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center. "She was also the first black woman to get approved to be on Olde Hampton's board of education at the time."
Community gatherings at Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center
Though the new neighborhood center has only been in town for just a year, “it already has a huge connection with the neighborhood," Gray says. Mary W. Jackson Neighborhood Center hosts a summer camp program in May with games and experiences for the kids. Locals can go to the center to play pickleball twice a week, attend bingo every third week of the month or enjoy line dancing on Wednesdays. "In December, we hosted a Christmas toy drive, and over 200 people came. Everyone thought it was so special. The center really brings our community together." In March they host a Brunch with Bunny, with “homemade breakfasts for adults and kids, and an Easter egg hunt with prizes in the eggs,” Gray says. Also nearby is Eason Park, which has walking paths next to Darling Stadium, and the Hampton Family YMCA less than a mile north of most homes.
Fresh fish dinners and historical sites in Olde Hampton
For fresh catfish and crabs, locals can head to Graham & Rollins Hampton Seafood Market. At Kente’s Afrikan American Café, a locally owned and operated fusion restaurant, guests dine on fried chicken and fish. When running everyday errands, residents can go to the nearby Walgreens on Settlers Landing Road, or head 2 miles north to Food Lion for groceries. Additional shops, museums, eateries and art galleries in downtown Hampton are less than a mile away. Locals can start with a latte from Fika Coffeehouse and Café and wander among more than 100 exhibits at the Virginia Air & Space Science Center or learn about Hampton’s Indigenous and African American history at the Hampton History Museum.
Eat, dance and come together at Mill Point Park
Mill Point Park hosts many local events on the banks of the Hampton River to celebrate the town and its history. "What’s most important about Downtown Hampton is that we're very historic. This is where the Virginia Air & Space Science Center was founded and built," Gray says. "But there are so many opportunities and growth happening here. We are rebuilding our history but also making room for new people and the future." The Crabtown Seafood Festival lets guests indulge in fresh catches from seafood vendors, listen to live music, and celebrate Hampton’s nautical history. Groovin’ by the Bay is the Mill Point Parks’ summer live music series, where every Sunday night, bands play a mix of beach, pop, oldies, Motown and rock music.
New and historical Olde Hampton homes
Olde Hampton’s two-story homes built in the last five years are designed in contemporary styles with neutral exteriors and single-car garages. Many have three to five bedrooms and can cost between $350,000 and $400,000. There are several established two- and three-bedroom bungalows and ranch-style homes that were built between the 1920s and the 1960s. These brick and vinyl siding houses on small-sized lots can be found at prices between $100,000 and $250,000 in varying states of renovation.
Drives and train rides up to Newport News
Olde Hampton is about 10 miles from the bustling center of Newport News to the north, which residents can access via Interstate 64. Just 3 miles farther north is Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, which supports commercial flights for weekends out of town. About 9 miles west on Interstate 664 and up Warwick Boulevard is the Newport News train station, which supports passenger trains.
Hampton City Public School classes and programs
Olde Hampton students can begin their education at A.W.E. Bassette Elementary School, graded a C on Niche, which was named for Andrew William Ernest Bassette. Bassette was a Black educator and lawyer from the 1800s and is still considered an upstanding historical community figure. C. Alton Lindsay Middle School, graded a B-minus, offers classes like German, business, civics and economics. Phoebus High School is rated a C-plus and offers its Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, Culinary Pathway.
