Hanover Park is a sprawling Chicago suburb offering affordable single-family homes and quiet neighborhoods set further from the major thoroughfares. “The village is home to a diverse population of almost 40,000,” says broker Cindy Banks with Re/Max Cornerstone. “But there is a certain sense of belonging that is tangible among locals of Hanover Park.” The community is full of parks that host the community’s events and festivals while residents gather at local restaurants and diners on nights out. Even with its size and diverse community, Hanover Park keeps residents engaged and connected.
Mom-and-pop hot dog and Greek joints
Hanover Park is full of longstanding mom-and-pop restaurants loved by locals. The Original Nana’s Hot Dogs is known for their Italian beef sandwiches and shakes, and boasts multiple local awards for these signature items. Brandy’s Gyros offers casual Greek dining, serving up gyros and kabobs. For breakfast and brunch, people head over to Briana’s Pancake House Restaurant for early morning classics like pancakes, waffles and eggs. Residents can stop right in Hanover Park for groceries at Tony’s Fresh Market, a local Chicagoland chain. For more options, Walmart Supercenter is just 1.3 miles away on Barrington Road. Woodland Heights Shopping Center is 2.3 miles along Irving Park Road and features a Jewel-Osco.

Monthly movie nights and concerts every summer
Hanover Park showcases its community spirit each summer with its busy social calendar and festivals in the park. For one night each summer month, people set up their picnic blankets and chairs on the lawn for Movie in the Park. The movie starts at dusk, but people can arrive earlier to play games or stock up on the available snacks. Another monthly summer event is Music on the Hill, which takes place on the stage at Hanover Park and features local bands. Summer might be more concentrated with events, but the Hanover Park community can also look forward to the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in December. People can get in the holiday spirit with caroling, pictures with Santa and train rides.
Hanover Park's ranches and split-levels
All around Hanover Park, ranches and split-levels dominate the residential streets. Trees planted at regular intervals along the sidewalks provide shade in the summer and a pop of color in the fall. Landscaping is minimal here, with at most a couple of shrubs or flowers along the house’s façade. The main appeal for the community seems to be its price point, “Home prices in Hanover Park tend to be lower than those in the surrounding suburbs, and you can find a wide range of prices, making it a great place for first-time buyers,” Banks says. The median price range is around $300,000, which is about $50,000 lower than the Chicago median.

Strolling along the lake at Hanover Park District
Green spaces are available throughout Hanover Park, so residents are never far from public recreational amenities. Hanover Park District sits at the heart of the community where residents can stroll along the walking paths and around the lake. It is home to Centre Court, an indoor tennis court facility that offers memberships for avid tennis players and open play on weekend afternoons. Ahlstrand Park features more athletic fields, like those for soccer, football and baseball, but there’s also a playground for the kids.

The Metrarail and connecting to the Interstates
While residents will likely be unable to walk to most amenities here, there are plenty of public transportation options available. To get around Hanover Park itself, residents can drive or bus along Barrington Road to the nearby shopping centers and parks. Ascension Saint Alexius is the nearest hospital, just over 3.5 miles along Barrington Road. While Hanover Park doesn’t sit along any Interstates, U.S. Grant Memorial High and Elgin-O’Hare Tollway both do. These local motorways connect to I-90 and I-290, which link residents with downtown Chicago, about 33 miles away and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 25 miles from Hanover Park. “And with a Metra station in the center of town, the location is really convenient,” Banks says. Hanover Park Station runs along the MD-W line, which goes downtown for another commuting option.
