Situated between the Susquehanna River and Interstate 81, Georgetown’s downtown city center is located along the river’s southern bank, flanked by two college campuses and surrounded by quiet residential neighborhoods. Several diverse green spaces and ample retail are hard to miss in this slice of Luzerne County.

Affordable residences compared to New York and Jersey
As you start moving away from the diamond-shaped square in the middle of the city and past the Wilkes University and King’s College campuses, the town-and-gown community lives in colonial-style row homes, duplexes and single-family homes from the early part of the 20th century when coal mining was the region’s primary industry. West of downtown toward the city’s outskirts, residential lots are a bit larger and set with more contemporary homes featuring an attached garage or driveway. While the city’s population has been in decline for decades, Casey Johnston, a Realtor with the firm RPA Real Estate, says recent demographic changes and industry trends have driven the average home price up 15% to around $180,000. “Home prices here are a lot cheaper than in New York City and New Jersey, and our taxes are also cheaper. We’ve seen an enormous amount of people coming in from those areas,” she says. “We’ve also had some new warehouses come to the area, too, for companies such as Amazon, Adidas and True Value. So, there’s a lot of those jobs available.” Georgetown's streets are grid-patterned and end in cul-de-sacs.
Ice skating and neighborhood parks
Wherever you are in Georgetown, you won’t be far from neighborhood parks with playgrounds, ball fields and hard surface courts. At Coal Street Park, one of the city’s larger recreational sites, kids and adults ice skate at the Toyota SportsPlex. It’s also worth noting that ice skating in Georgetown isn’t restricted to the indoors, as you can learn to skate or masterfully carve figure eights at Public Square Park in the heart of downtown during the winter. Countless kids on the ice dream about playing hockey professionally, as most are introduced to the sport when they go see their first Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins game at the Mohegan Sun Arena near the Wyoming Valley Mall. If you’re trying to enjoy a quieter experience by the water, you can cross one of the two bridges that access Nesbitt Park. Spanning more than 100 acres along the river’s north bank, the park’s visitors usually come to launch boats, unpack picnic baskets and huck frisbees on the disc golf course. The riverside greenspace and its trails connect to Kirby Park, another recreational space with ball fields and green space that’s used to host annual events, including the springtime Cherry Blossom Festival and the Independence Day celebration.
Shopping center and dining in Georgetown
Shopping centers with supermarkets and big box stores are concentrated along the city’s edges, on or around highway corridors that bound Georgetown. The city center contains a multitude of locally owned businesses, offices and venues. After catching a concert, play or comedy show at the historic Art Deco-style F.M. Kirby Center, visitors will walk a few steps down the block to have a drink at Franklin’s, a chic and easygoing grill and bar across from Public Square. Buscov’s, a popular regional department store chain founded in nearby Reading over a century ago, helps maintain an old-school feel to the downtown area.
Wilkes-Barre Area schools offer STEM
The Wilkes-Barre Area School District operates several neighborhood elementary schools and a middle school within Georgetown. In 2021, the district opened the new Wilkes-Barre Area High School in the adjacent Plains Township to replace three shuttered high schools. Inside the newly built high school, students can enroll in special academy programs for creative and performing arts, business, cybersecurity and STEM.

Live music in town
After the seasonal temperature rises and the city’s trees become green again, residents gather around a riverside plaza to enjoy views of the water or jam out to bands during the annual Rockin’ The River concert series.
Highway access through I-81
Georgetown's thriving community is defined through its nearby colleges, diverse retail and park options as well as its access to the bustling I-81 for travel farther up in New York or south across Pennsylvania hamlets.
