One of Hartford’s most intriguing areas is the neighborhood of Frog Hollow. It is an area of mixed use, containing state office buildings, a 24-acre historic cemetery, a major public park, shops, restaurants and residences. The neighborhood got its name from the marshes created by the Park River when it flowed through the area. Due to its proximity to downtown Hartford, it is regarded as a working-class residential area, spanning about 35 square blocks in size. The northern edge of the neighborhood was originally defined by the Park River, which has been diverted underground in modern times. The southern edge was lined by the factories that once employed many local residents, but those structures are now being repurposed into commercial properties or apartment buildings. The neighborhood as a whole is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Neighborhood revitalization
As diverse as Frog Hollow is, it is supported by a dedicated Neighborhood Revitalization Zone organization. While the main goal for this group is to revitalize Frog Hollow through the collaborative involvement of residents and businesses, it is also responsible for developing and promoting neighborhood activities such as festivals and information meetings. Another organization “activated” a vacant lot with the help of grant funds to create a community space in which residents gather for events, workshops and activities. It has become a place that people congregate, using it for barbeques, special events and creating art and murals on the walls. Another local organization is active throughout the year running successful and sustainable social enterprises and providing local food access through a farmers’ market.
