A thriving neighborhood market near Parkville homes
Every day, drivers bypass Parkville on the way in and out of Hartford in central Connecticut, unaware of the West Hartford neighborhood’s bustling local market. Situated in the crook of the interstate’s bend, Parkville is made up of streets flaring off Prospect Avenue, and in its northeastern corner, the Parkville Market is a region staple. Dubbed “Connecticut’s Food Hall”, around two dozen restaurants and bars call the establishment home, and it also hosts events complete with dining both under its roof or out in the open.
“Parkville, in the last several years, has somewhat come back alive thanks to the Parkville Market,” says Bob LaPerla, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England. “It’s a large emporium with a lot of different vendors in there and a grocery store. It’s really kind of a neat place. It’s got a nice vibe to it.” The market and Parkville’s Stop & Shop location are each about a mile at most from the homes in the northwesternmost corner, meaning that restaurants and grocery shopping are extremely convenient for neighborhood residents.
International restaurants on Park Avenue
Pop-ups and rentable private areas are staples of the Parkville Market, as well. Patrons order classic American food at the Meltdown Grill, or for international flavors they head to the Jamaican Jerk Shack or Burrito Loko. The Local is one of the market’s several bars and pours nightcaps while hosting trivia and karaoke. “It’s a pretty exciting little place,” LaPerla says. “It has a bar in the center of the building, and then there are two levels of stalls – everything from Ethiopian, Peruvian, Chinese, you name it. It’s gotten quite a bit of praise.” Other events hosted by the market include a summer concert series, movie nights and even dance lessons.
Elsewhere in the neighborhood, most restaurants sit on Park Avenue, which runs through Parkville’s center. Villa Brasil Café and Le Bijou Pastry Shop & Restaurant offer more international flair, and diners also visit George’s Pizza or G’s Steaks & Grinders. The Stop & Shop on New Park Avenue is the primary grocery stop for residents. “There’s a BJ’s over there that’s very popular,” says Dawn Gagliardi, the team leader of the Gagliardi Team at SERHANT CT. “There’s a lot of shopping, for sure.”

Area green spaces and a vibrant atmosphere
There aren’t many green spaces within Parkville, but George H. Day Playground offers expansive equipment for kids to play on alongside a pool and sports courts. Across Arbor Street from the playground, Real Art Ways and the Art Connection Studio offer a creative outlet. “There’s actually a lot of design-type places over there,” Gagliardi says. “There’s interior design, architecture and textiles, and people have art spaces and design spaces over there. It’s a little more industrial and there’s not as many houses there, but close to that there are some cute little neighborhoods.”
For more recreation, Kennedy Memorial Park sits just west and has multiple fields and courts, a pool, walkways and playgrounds, and to the southwest Beachland Park has similar amenities. “It has its own cultural vibe,” LaPerla says of the area, where Hispanic culture is celebrated with events and festivals. “It’s really a vibrant community.”

Homes located near Park Street
Most homes in Parkville are concentrated in the northern section of the neighborhood, with some grid-like residential roads branching off Park Street. Multi-family homes are the most common setup, many designed as colonials and falling between $300,000 and $450,000. “A lot of what you have over there are apartments and condos,” LaPerla says. Residents should also be aware that Parkville receives a CAP crime score of 8 out of 10.
Though much of Parkville is residential, the homes are complemented by access to the Parkville Market and other stores close by. The neighborhood is situated on the western outskirts of Hartford itself. “West Hartford, in general, has the feeling of a city or an urban center,” Gagliardi says. “There’s a lot of restaurants, bars, shopping, music and theater, that kind of stuff. It feels very urban, but you can still get a house and have a little bit of land. You don’t have to live in an apartment or a condo. It’s much more reasonably priced.”
