Diversity and expansion in a city of firsts
Sitting at the crossroads of Hayward, California’s diverse population and expanding communities,
Harder-Tennyson is bringing new meaning to the city’s nickname: The Heart of the Bay. Building off the diversity it prides itself on, the area is full of firsts, including California’s first Japanese garden, the longest-running Battle of the Bands and one of the nation’s first gay proms. Its unique location also makes the neighborhood desirable for advanced industries — technology, biotechnology and manufacturing — and Harder-Tennyson is attracting more professionals in these sectors. “We’re centrally located to the rest of Hayward, so we’re right in the middle of everything in town,” says local property manager Deborah Jones. “We’ve become a major player in the Bay Area. Even though there’s a ton of competition from the cities, some people prefer living a little farther out.” With a location close enough to enjoy city living and far enough away to enjoy the calm and quiet that comes with that, Harder-Tennyson provides a balanced grey area for residents with that preference.

A mix of midcentury and Mediterranean
Winding roads interconnect throughout Harder-Tennyson, primarily lined with Craftsman bungalows and ranch-style homes, with sections of midcentury modern influence giving this neighborhood the classic California look. Cul-de-sacs and cutouts come lined with sidewalks and sparse trees, providing an excellent view of the brightly colored buildings on display throughout the neighborhood. Recent developments bring modern builds sporting Mediterranean designs, and plenty of properties filled with townhouses and condominiums make the neighborhood one of Hayward’s most mixed neighborhoods. Townhouses generally range in price from $500,000 to $700,000, while single-family homes of varying styles, including new developments, can be priced between $800,000 and $1.2 million.

One girl’s dream come true
Lush green space is all over this slice of Hayward when it’s time to take the fun outside. “One thing that’s loved about the neighborhood is the great access to recreation,” says Louis Heystek, an East Bay Realtor with Compass. “You have Garin Regional Park nearby and the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center,” which teaches all about the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Estuary. Tennyson Park is a major fixture in the neighborhood, offering a fitness court and the Hayward Skatepark. The park is also home to Mia’s Dream Come True Playground — the vision of Mia Vásquez’s parents, Daniel Vásquez and Emelyn Lacayo, as their daughter was born with Cockayne Syndrome, which comes with cerebral palsy. With a $5,000 gift from the Make-A-Wish® Foundation, the family set out to create an all-abilities play area for children. After enlisting the help of the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) and the HARD Foundation, that $5,000 quickly became $3.5 million. The one-acre playground includes a Music Therapy Zone, a Sensory Wall, appropriate waterpark-like features and much more. Mia’s Dream Come True Playground opened in the Summer of 2021.
