Secluded neighborhood features woodsy trails and hillside views
At the foot of the East Bay Hills, Hayward Boulevard begins an ascent past the East Bay campus of California State University, known as Cal State East Bay, and climbs into the Hayward Highland neighborhood. Clusters of apartment buildings give way to homes on generous tree-studded lots, ending at Stonebrae Country Club. Vantage points along the way provide views down into Maple Canyon or further out to Coyote Hills and the San Mateo Bridge over the San Francisco Bay. “There are a ton of trails, and there’s J.A. Lewis Park up toward the top. People go there just for the views,” says Kerissa Calvo, a top-performing Realtor with Fohl Realty & Investments, who has worked in the Hayward Highland area for ten years. “The area as a whole is very desirable.” Another draw is that Hayward Highland has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Updated older homes and spacious newer homes with views
“It’s quiet and more secluded,” says local Realtor Cristina Bales, president and lead agent at Fohl Realty and Investments who has lived in Hayward since she was two years old and worked in real estate for 19 years. “There are both one-story and two-story, generously sized homes there.” Hayward Highland includes ranch-style homes, two-story traditionals and rambling Spanish-inspired estates. “A lot of families have lived in these homes since they were built and now are slowly moving out of them,” says Calvo. “We definitely have a lot of investors who have purchased and flipped them, so there are more updated homes as well. Maybe 65 to 70 percent are updated.” Some of the updates include bigger windows that take advantage of the views, high-end finishes like quartz countertops, and updated landscaping. New development in the 2000s brought multi-level homes with Spanish-influenced architecture. The average home value is $1.4 million. Fixer-uppers and older homes range from about $750,000 to $1.5 million, while those with extensive updates range from about $1.3 million to $2 million. Large newer homes in gated communities near the Stonebrae Country Club range from $1.8 million to $2.6 million.

The Stonebrae Country Club at the summit of Hayward Highland offers memberships that include golf and fine dining. Otherwise, most shopping and dining options are down the hill, with a couple of casual eateries around the Cal State East Bay campus, such as Bronco Billy’s Pizza Palace and China Best. For a wider range of choices, central Hayward is filled with shopping, dining and entertainment options. The city is working to make Hayward a destination for East Bay residents and recently bought Cinema Place to renovate it as part of that plan. The district surrounding the cinema includes a Lucky’s grocery store, Starbucks and Peet’s Coffee, and a dozen or more diverse eateries. Those include Wakamatsu Japanese, Buon Appetito for classic Italian, and Ghazni Afghan for kabobs. Southland Mall is under 7 miles away as well, and includes a Macy’s, JC Penney’s, and typical mall shops and eateries.

There are many fast food restaurants in the area, but there are still a variety of restaurants. The fast food restaurants seem to sometimes get more customers than the restaurants because of the pricing.

There are parks for kids to play, but they aren't always kept clean or updated. There is a park nearby my house that needs to be fixed because the swing set is pretty old and it seems that when you sit on it the thing might fall. As for trash there is a lot of loitering at the parks because many homeless people tend to go there. There aren't really any national parks in the area although there is a regional park nearby. Wildlife isn't very prevalent in the area because I live in more of an urban area.

I live in a quiet middle class community where people take pride in the appearance of the front of their homes. There are parks nearby and plenty of scenic walking trails.
