Blending old and new
Upper B Street contains an eclectic blend of architectural designs that run the gamut of classic California styles. “This community is filled with a lot of homes built in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, back when people got to build homes on bigger lots,” says Dinh Truong, Broker Associate with Compass Realty and board member of the regional Real Estate Association. “New developments have been popping up since the 1990s, bringing in a lot of buyers from the peninsula, so it’s a good mix of longtime residents welcoming new neighbors.” Classic Colonial Revivals and Queen Annes are mixed in with Craftsman bungalows close to the historic downtown district. To the east, cul-de-sacs filled with newer construction donning modern Mediterranean façades are surrounded by midcentury modern ranch-style homes set against the rolling hills. Several townhouse and condo communities, ranging from $500,000 to $700,000, can also be found for more simplified surroundings. Single-family homes start in the $600,000 range for more modest housing, reaching nearly $1.7 million for recent builds.

The park also has an onsite community center used for city events and available for private rentals. “What a lot of people don’t know is the Japanese Gardens are right at the edge of the neighborhood,” adds Truong, “and the Douglas Morrisson Theatre is next door to them. Hayward residents really like to support local arts and culture, and the volunteers there always put on great shows.”
