Suburban Neighborhood in Pennsylvania
Allegheny County 15106
Spanning only a third of a square mile and 6 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, the Borough of Heidelberg is named after the German town by the same name where most of its early residents hailed from before they immigrated to America. The suburb is part of Allegheny County and has almost 600 households. “It is what you think about when you think about a Pittsburgh borough,” says Gina Fonzi, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker, who has worked in the Pittsburgh market for more than a decade. “There are plenty of restaurants, shopping, and basically everything you need is right at your fingertips.”
Hilly borough streets slope up and down to match the area's rolling hills. Heidelberg’s home inventory features Pittsburgh architectural-style staples of Cottages, ranches and American Foursquare homes. Properties are elevated and built off the street with slopping, well-maintained yards and short driveways that lead to garages. Buyers should expect a two-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch to sell for almost $200,000, while a four-bedroom, three-bathroom American Foursquare could start around $225,000. “The inventory across all of Pittsburgh market is very limited, and over the last six months, it has been extremely limited in Heidelberg,” Fonzi says.
Children are districted for the Chartiers Valley School District, which scores a B-plus on Niche and serves 3,400 students from the Boroughs of Bridgeville and Heidelberg as well as Collier and Scott Townships. Students head to Chartiers Valley Primary School for kindergarten through second grade, Chartiers Valley Intermediate School for third to fifth grade, Chartiers Valley Middle and Chartiers Valley High School. The primary school scores a B-plus on Niche, the intermediate and high schools score a B, and the middle school earns a B-minus. Both the middle and high schools moved into new buildings in 2019, while the high school class of 2023 reported 65% of its students moving on to secondary education.
Off Industry Way, Heidelberg Park is an open green space with a paved walking trail, a small jungle gym, and a swing set. The park also features an indoor community room and a covered picnic area that are both available to rent. Heidelberg has a vast amateur soccer history as the neighborhood was competitive nationally, winning titles in 1929 and 1955. The Heidelberg Soccer Club is still active today and offers teams for various ages.
With its large German heritage, Oktoberfest is an annual event in Heidelberg. More recently, it has moved into a fall festival that is a one-day event with live music, carnival games, axe throwing, and food and drinks from local vendors. Another prominent community event each year is the neighborhood cleanup organized by the local pizza joint, Pizza Americana.
Residents can head to the Raceway Plaza South, which offers various big box stores. Pick up weekly groceries from the Shop ‘n Save, start your next home improvement project at Lowe’s, and find everything in between at Walmart. State Route 50 doubles as Main Street with boutique shops and restaurants, including two favorites, Insurrection AleWorks, a bar serving American food, and Brick N’ Mortar Kitchen & Catering, serving everything from burgers to pizza.
Located just 6 miles from Pittsburgh, Heidelberg is a small suburb in Allegheny County.
