Living high above the Strip in guard-gated tranquility
Above the Las Vegas Valley in Nevada's McCullough Mountains, MacDonald Highlands is a guard-gated master-planned haven offering some of the area's most desirable views of the Las Vegas Strip. Developed by Rich MacDonald, who also chooses to live here, the community broke ground in 2020 and showcases some of the area's top builders. MacDonald's vision — a decidedly upscale lifestyle of exquisite resources in an extraordinary landscape — is still being realized. Its centerpiece is the newly renovated DragonRidge Country Club, named in honor of the neighborhood's rocky "Sleeping Dragon" ridge that's believed by feng shui practitioners to create prosperity. Neighbors enjoy community parks, walking trails, and quick access to the private Henderson Executive Airport. It's the Las Vegas Valley's first hillside community designed to be eco-friendly, using drought-tolerant plants, and a water conservation system as well as artificial turf on the central golf course.
"Our cotton candy sunrises are to die for," says Amanda Bolton, Realtor with the Knight Real Estate Group of LPT Realty, who's been selling in the area since 2014. "You can start your day with coffee on your balcony or in your yard, overlooking the beautiful valley. And then in the evenings, you have this fusion of mountains and city, when the sun's almost down and the lights are coming up that's just other-worldly." Some of the valley's most glamorous homes are here, and there's still room to customize dream homes.

Central County Club golfing, dog parks and nearby water park
DragonRidge Country Club is the community hub. "People come here to connect and make friends," says Meghann Trager, Assistant General Manager for DragonRidge Country Club. "It comes naturally because we're such a welcoming community. We host champagne socials, and our Fourth of July fireworks is a big deal. The whole driving range is filled with bounce houses and water slides and over 2,000 people show up." Since 2020, DragonRidge has invested more than $10.5 million in capital improvements, including a 2023 full course renovation to make the par 72 course more water-conservative. "Even if you don't golf," adds Trager, "our social membership includes fitness classes, pickleball and daily tennis clinics. We also do lots of junior programs and summer camps, so there's something for everyone."
Resident pups enjoy walks with owners on the treed pathway at Linear Park. Picnics and playdates are popular in West Park, and dogs are invited to "Yappy Hours" in fenced dedicated dog parks where pups can run leash-free. Exercise options fill East Park, including outdoor sports courts and the DragonRidge Tennis and Athletic Center. There are also paved community walking trails with outdoor fitness stations and water fountains for people and dogs. At the northwest tip of the neighborhood, kids love the splash pad in the city-run Amador Vista Park. For more water fun, the 23-acre Cowabunga Bay Water Park, with slides, rides and a vintage surf theme is only 7 miles north. MacDonald Highlands is also situated between the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area's hiking and biking trails and Lake Mead National Recreation Area's swimming, water skiing and fishing. Both are with a 25-mile or so drive.

Custom and semi-custom contemporary homes and new Four Seasons high-rise
MacDonald Highlands is often chosen for its exclusivity and privacy, and the fact that it offers more affordable luxury living than The Ridges nearby. It's also the first residential development to incorporate Frank Lloyd Wright-style architecture in a desert hillside setting. The community is entirely guard-gated, and several of its gates are spectacularly landscaped with mature palms and grass lawns brimming with desert blossoms. Amanda Bolton, Realtor with Knight Real Estate Group who's been selling in the area since 2014, says, "The gated lock-and-go lifestyle here is great for people who like to travel or spend summers elsewhere. You can have a caretaker come check on your property to clear the dust — because we're in a valley and we do get dust. The guard gates won't let anyone in who isn't owner-approved, and they always have security doing roaming surveillance." The community holds multiple residential subdivisions, such as Dragon's Glen, Dragon's Reserve and Highlander Ridge, that Bolton describes as "very crisp and manicured." New construction contemporary stunners in SkyVu and Vu Pointe range from $1.5 million to $4 million. In the double-gated Dragon's Reserve, midsize homes range between $6 million and $10 million, and larger homes ask between $10 million and $20 million. MacDonald Highlands' overall aesthetic is stipulated in the master-planned guidelines as "Desert Elegance Architecture," with clean lines and natural materials that blend artfully into the desert environment. Townhouses on Serenity Point and Tranquil Peak range from $2 million to $3 million.
Home options also include the new, resort-style Four Seasons Private Residences Las Vegas, slated for completion in 2026. This two-tower condominium campus will offer 171 homes wired for SmartHome systems and designed for global citizens with multiple homes. Owners get sky-high vistas of what Las Vegas locals call "the ocean," which is the glowing Strip, including the spectacular new Sphere. Concierge services cater to residents via an app, allowing for on-demand cleaning, food service and more. Homeowners in Four Seasons will pay around $330 monthly for the MacDonald Highlands HOA as well as approximately $1 per square-foot HOA for Four Seasons' host of included luxuries. These high-rise homes start at around 2,300 square feet for $3.5 million and can fetch as much as $20 million for penthouses. Within the single-family subdivisions, there's a lot of construction going on as the community grows, which means navigating the slightly narrow streets can be slow-going in places.
MacDonald Highlands' overall aesthetic is "Desert Elegance Architecture".

Date nights at Green Valley Ranch, French and Italian cuisine
Date nights, entertainment and eateries fill The District at Green Valley Ranch, just 4 miles west of the community. Delivering a more casual and tranquil ambiance than the dazzling strip, the District is tree-lined and cobblestone-paved with grassy lawns. Bolton says, "You can go to dinner at any of the many restaurants at Green Valley Ranch and then see a movie at the Regal Green Valley Ranch theater. Or, attached to the District, the Green Valley Ranch Resort Spa and Casino has a nice pool with a peaceful kids area and also an adult pool for 21 and up that serves cocktails."

Easy access to the 215 freeway, private Henderson airport
While residents don't rely on public transportation here, cars can directly access the 215 freeway from any of the neighborhood's guard gates to reach all of Las Vegas and the Inland Empire. "Some people living here do have their own private airplanes, or at least only fly private, so it's really important that the Henderson Executive Airport is only about 10 miles away." Residents are also only about a 12-mile drive from Harry Reid International Airport.

Founders Day and Fourth of July celebrations
"Our Founders Day celebration," says Trager, "is so fun. We celebrate the opening of MacDonald Highlands in 2000 every April because that's also our founder's birthday month. This year, we created a passport to every facility – the fitness center, café, bar and we offered food pairings in every location."
