Secluded and wooded residential town
About 30 miles inland from Portland lies Baldwin, the kind of town in Maine where it’s easy to spot a mountain but hard to find a restaurant. It’s the kind of rustic place in New England where residents strap up their work boots, make use of two-acre lots and flap American flags. Near the pristine Lake Sebago, the Saco River and Douglas Mountain, outdoor recreation can be found on almost every corner. In the summer, people take their RVs and boats to the lake and float the lazy river, but Baldwin locals are a bit more removed from this life during the rest of the year. “It tends to be a place where people want to relive their summer camp days,” says Lois O’Connor, owner and Broker at Sunset Lakes Real Estate in nearby Casco. “It’s very rural here. It’s not like suburbia where there’s neighborhoods.” Maine State Route 113 – a two-lane road – is the main way around town, with backroads branching off to lead residents to their dirt driveways and secluded homes.
Lake cottages and Colonials with acreage
It’s not uncommon for Baldwin residents to request that images of their houses be removed from real estate websites. Homes built as far back as the 1840s to the more recent late 2000s sit on multiple acres hidden behind tall fir and maple trees. Ranch homes, New England Cape Cods and Colonial Farmhouses – some with wrap-around porches and winding driveways and others situated on small lakes with personal docks – range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 square feet and typically cost between $200,000 to $750,000. Thanks to Baldwin’s location in the Maine countryside, there are also several 3- to 60-acre lots of land for sale from $50,000 to upwards of $250,000.

Scenic hiking trails and Sebago Lake
Baldwin is part of a 30-mile trek called the Pequawket Trail, which goes from Standish to the northern tip of the White Mountain National Forest. Hikers pass the Saco River, the historic Hemlock Bridge in Fryeburg, sandy beaches, rocky climbs and – hopefully – wildlife like moose. To the north is the Mount Cutler Trail, a 4-mile moderate loop that’s popular for dog walks. And on the east side is the shorter, 2-mile Douglas Mountain trail with an overlook of Maine’s rolling landscape. Residents are also near boating and family adventures at Sebago Lake, the second largest in Maine.

Eating at Lindsay’s and Bay Haven in Cornish
Baldwin residents head about 4 miles to nearby Cornish to grocery shop at Call’s Shop’n Save. “There’s not a lot in Baldwin, but the restaurants in Cornish are amazing,” says Mike Doherty, owner of Saco River Hideaway Campground that’s located between Baldwin and Cornish. “People come from Portland and Boston to eat here.” Diners indulge in a classic Maine lobster at the long-standing Bay Haven or large portions of pizza and fried calamari at Fairgrounds. “But Krista’s and Lindsay’s at The Cornish Inn are the best, in my opinion,” Doherty says. At Lindsay’s, patrons can enjoy seasonal cocktails and locally sourced brunch covered in Maine syrup in a lodge atmosphere or on the wrap-around porch.

Small class sizes in Sacopee Valley schools
Some academic perks of rural living are small class sizes and individualized attention, which can be seen through the students’ state test scores. Children in the towns of Baldwin, Cornish, Hiram, Parsonsfield and Porter come together to attend Sacopee Valley public schools, all of which boast less than a 13-1 student-teacher ratio and about an 85% reading and math proficiency, according to Niche. Students can start at Sacopee Valley Elementary before progressing to Sacopee Valley Middle, both of which receive a B-minus Niche grade. They can finish their education at Sacopee Valley High, graded a C-minus.

Nostalgic inland Maine campgrounds
For inland Mainers, it’s easy to revisit their childhood summer days waking up in a cottage by the lake or slicing through the calm river in a kayak. Coasting on Route 113
Residents get around town on Maine State Route 113, which connects to other state highways in a 35-mile trek to downtown Portland. As secluded from the bustle of the city as Baldwin is, it’s no surprise that CAP Index gives this town a crime score of 1 out of a possible 10.
