Small town with big city commutes

Hickory Grove was first settled in the late 1600s as a farming town, getting its name from the hickory trees that grow native in the area. Today, a few cattle farmers still remain, and the town center is home to nearly 500 people, a growing population. “The farming aspect isn’t what it used to be, as land gets used for houses,” says Don Rhodes, the Town Clerk. “We see a lot of younger people moving out here who commute to the bigger cities, so on the weekdays, you won’t see many people out and about.” For commuters, Hickory Grove is 50 miles from Charlotte, 25 miles from Rock Hill and 12 miles from York. The town center consists of a few businesses, and the area is desirable to those looking for quiet, small-town living at a cheaper price point than nearby cities. But for bigger city amenities like airports, malls and hospitals, residents should be prepared to drive for several miles.

Wide open country living

The town's architecture consists of brick ranch styles and contemporary clapboards, ranging from early twentieth-century to new construction. Most three-bedroom properties cost around $200,000 for half-acre lots and around $300,000 for 3 acres. Father away from the town center, larger properties can get up to $800,000 for 20 acres and just over $1 million for 50 acres. These luxury homes or rural farmsteads are often set back from the road with long driveways for privacy. Closer to town, homes line the street, and residents can see their neighbors from the front porch.

Homes with long drives and set back homes are more common just outside the center of town.

Teachers that treat their kids "like their own"

“Hickory Grove feels like the quintessential place to raise a family,” says Danielle Childers, the Broker/Owner of Homeland Realty Group, who grew up in Hickory Grove. “Every child belongs to everyone, and the schoolteachers are no exception — they love those kids like their own.” Childers is referring to the teachers at Hickory Grove-Sharon Elementary School, which receives a B rating from Niche. For further education, kids head off to York, about 12 miles away. York Middle and York Comprehensive High School both receive a B-minus from Niche. The high school includes the Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center, where students can take specialized classes in fields like agriculture, engineering and health sciences. High school students can also take dual enrollment courses with York Technical College.

Rural stores at the town's center

Shopping and dining in the area are limited to small stores in the town’s center. The C&M Convenience Store offers quick daily essentials, and Eddie’s Concessions, the only restaurant in town, serves homemade burgers and other comfort food. Sandifer Feed & Seed is known for its “deer crack” feed and other agricultural supplies. The couple that runs the business provides more than just feed supplies, though. The store has a small lending library and sells a selection of locally made crafts. John L. Gaddy Wholesale, the biggest business in town, is a wholesale distributor of convenience store goods. For a wider variety of shopping, residents drive 6 miles into Sharon for a Dollar General or 12 miles into York for bigger box stores like Walmart and Food Lion.

Community in Hickory Grove

Hickory Grove is known for its Christmas Parade at the beginning of December, where the fire department and local organizations dress up and walk or drive down the main street. Kids line the street with bags to collect candy thrown by the parade. Other local events center around small-town traditions. “My favorite event was always cow patty bingo,” Childers says. “The baseball fields get gridded off, and a bunch of cows are let out onto it — we all stand around with barbecue, and if a cow drops a patty in your square, you get a cash prize.” And when there is nothing else going on, kids run loose behind the York County Magistrate building at a small local park with baseball fields and a playground.
