About Hickory Hills, IL

A small community full of local support with a nearby nature preserve

The city of Hickory Hills sits atop the Tinley Moraine, a series of hilly ridges created by the Wisconsin glaciation. Since its incorporation in 1951, the community’s population has grown to around 14,000, maintaining a sense of calm despite being within reach of downtown Chicago. “It’s not very big at all,” says Sue Pelzter, Owner of Delicious Creations, a local bakery. “It’s a small little town community.” As a result, there is not much to keep busy with in the city, which is why residents frequent the expansive nature preserves to the west and local restaurants found throughout.

Sledding at Kasey Meadow Park

When the weather is nice, sports enthusiasts flock to Kasey Meadow Park to practice atop its sports field and cool off while playing about in the splash pad. However, excitement in the park is found during wintertime. “Sledding is a big deal here, and everyone knows about the big hill on Roberts Road,” explains Pelzer about the park’s large hill. Spears Woods borders the community to the west on the other side of South Kean Avenue, allowing residents quick access to the wooded 40-plus-acre Palos Trail System. Fans of golf head to the 18-hole course at Hickory Hills Country Club, which Pelzer notes is always busy, with plenty of fun things for the kids.

Eating along South Robert Road

“People in the community like to support local businesses,” says Peltzer. Thankfully, residents have plenty to choose from—like The Pit Rib House on South Robert Road. Here, patrons enjoy its famous pork chops while exploring vintage posters and décor that cover its walls. Sitting three blocks north is the coffee and pastries from Olympia Bakery, which can be taken to go before picking up groceries at the local Jewel-Osco and retail items from the nearby Walmart just a few miles southeast.

The homes of Hickory Hills

The community’s rolling roads make up the city's grid-like residential streets. A walk along its modest sidewalks, which are just big enough to take the pup on a stroll, showcases a variety of architectural styles among homes. This includes ranch, split-level and bi-level-style homes, which are most common, as well as a sprinkling of Modern Craftsman and Tudor styles. Most homes were constructed during the mid-20th century and up through the early 2000s. Many front yards are home to mature trees and shrubbery lining the front house, while roughly a third feature a private backyard pool. Those looking to move in can expect a price range from $130,000 for a one-bedroom condo to $475,000 for larger free-standing homes.

The sounds of Chicago Midway International Airport

Considering that the landing strips at Chicago Midway International Airport sit less than 10 miles away, residents can expect to hear planes periodically arriving and departing. Though many consider this to be background noise, it is worth considering for those who are sensitive to this kind of overhead noise
