Quiet streets near bustling interstates

Across the waters of Oak Hollow Lake from downtown High Point lies the neighborhood of Bent Tree. This suburban community is comprised of quiet streets and multiple large subdivisions, ranging from single-family homes on large lots to freshly constructed townhomes. Though this residential area feels worlds away from the city bustle, it’s well-connected to the greater Piedmont Triad region by multiple major thoroughfares, such as Interstates 40 and 74. “The area is really convenient, allowing you to quickly get over to popular streets like Wendover,” says Landon Stone, owner and team leader of Boro Realty Group. “Not only is it close to the Interstates, but it’s also a pretty good spot to be for people that work in Winston-Salem and Greensboro.” The neighborhood is also home to three Guilford County Schools, from elementary to high school, making it easy to drop the kids off before work. “It’s walkable to the schools,” says Linda Beck, a Realtor with Tate Allen Realtors. “It’s probably one of the most desirable locations in our High Point area because of the schools. That’s the biggest selling point.”

Old and new townhouses, plus single-family homes

A web of gently winding streets connects the many subdivisions of Bent Tree. Although no sidewalks line the street, this neighborhood’s wide roads and shady oaks provide a peaceful place to go for a walk. Here, homebuyers can find spacious houses on quarter-acre lots, framed by neatly trimmed lawns and separated by broad-canopied trees. Most of the construction in Bent Tree began in the 1990s with New Traditional homes, though a handful of Millenium Mansion homes from the 2000s can also be found. Nowadays, contemporary Craftsman or farmhouse-inspired homes are cropping up left and right. In the neighborhood's northwest corner, an array of townhouses range from traditional rowhome styles to newly built ranch-style varieties. While townhouses are typically priced from $200,000 to $460,000, single-family homes can list from $250,000 to $575,000. “Our entire market is a really stable and rapidly growing market,” Stone says.

A full pipeline of schools near home

Three public schools in the Guilford County Schools district are clustered together in the neighborhood, within easy walking distance of one another and right across the street from some homes. Southwest Elementary scores an A from Niche, while Southwest Guilford Middle earns a B. Southwest Guilford High receives a B-plus, with high marks for its athletic programs. The Southwest Guilford Cowboys hold numerous state championship titles across nine sports, with the boys basketball team taking home the 3A trophy in 2019. Also in the neighborhood is Phoenix Academy High School. This public charter is part of the National Heritage Academies system, whose students were shown to outperform their traditional public school counterparts in a recent Stanford study.

Deep River Recreation Center and a nearby lake

The Deep River Recreation Center is a popular facility for youth baseball and softball games, featuring a concession stand for snacks while families cheer on their little athletes. Those who prefer other sports can get active on the tennis courts or the basketball court, and there’s a playground with a picnic shelter where kids can let loose. Even golfers can head to the Deep River Golf Range to hone their swing on the driving range or register for a lesson to brush up on the basics. “Oak Hollow Lake also isn’t far,” Beck says. “They do concerts there all summer.” Oak Hollow Festival Park is an easy 3-mile drive down Eastchester Drive and provides lakefront access. Notably, this waterfront park hosts the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival, which celebrates the High Point native’s impact on the music world with a weekend of live performances.

Busy shopping centers just beyond the ‘burbs

Thanks in part to its position between two major highways, Bent Tree is situated along a bustling corridor. Residents are within close reach of grocery stores, as a Harris Teeter, Walmart Neighborhood Market and Food Lion are all clustered around Wendover Avenue. On rainy days, residents head to Regal Palladium to catch a movie close to home. There are plenty of chain and local restaurants nearby, ranging from fast-food drive-thrus to casual sit-down eateries. Sammy G’s Tavern serves steak and seafood that feels upscale, but the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere makes it suitable for any night out. Odeh’s Mediterranean Kitchen is another local mainstay for shawarma, while Mi Pueblo Mexican Grill is a beloved regional chain with a vibrant cantina feel.

Half an hour from Greensboro or Winston-Salem

Bent Tree is right off North Carolina Highway 68, known locally as Eastchester Drive. This central High Point thoroughfare provides a 7-mile, or roughly 15-minute, route into the city’s quaint downtown district. Still, the neighborhood is also well-connected to the rest of the Piedmont Triad region. “It’s not far from the Piedmont Triad International Airport, and you’ve got easy access to Greensboro. It’s just off I-40,” Beck says. Both I-40 and I-74 have entrances within a couple miles of the neighborhood. Commuters can reach Greensboro in about 12.5 miles, or a 25-minute drive, while Winston-Salem is approximately 20 miles away, or about half an hour by car.
