Suburban Neighborhood in Maryland
Montgomery County 20783, 20903
Less than 5 miles north of Washington, D.C., Hillandale offers commuter-friendly living along Interstate 495 and a wealth of verdant outdoor getaways. “It’s very quiet, very much a modern suburbia,” says realtor Tierra Willard of Keller Williams Preferred. “It has beautiful parks, a lot of trees — nature at its finest.”
Hillandale is a census-designated place in eastern Maryland, split between Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. Just under 6,000 people call it home, living mainly in single-family homes on winding, lightly wooded streets. Most of these have stood since the 1950s, ‘60s or ‘70s and display common midcentury design sensibilities. “Split-levels and raised ramblers are most of the homes in the neighborhood,” Willard says. You’ll also find Colonials, Tudors and Cape Cods from earlier decades scattered across the area. Older, smaller homes — say, a three-bedroom 1950s Colonial around 1,250 square feet — start in the high $300,000s. If you’re in the market for a 2,000-plus-square-foot, five-bedroom house with robust updates, you might spend up to $800,000.
Riggs Road roughly divides Hillandale into the Montgomery and Prince George’s public school systems to the west and east, respectively. Most students fall within Montgomery County and attend Roscoe R. Nix Elementary School through second grade, then finish grades three through five at Cresthaven Elementary. They then join nearly 1,000 peers at Francis Scott Key Middle before finally arriving at Springbrook High School, which Willard describes as among the best in the state. Awarded an A-minus from Niche, Springbrook features an International Baccalaureate program and the Academy of Information Technology, offering career-prep programs in computer science, web design and more. Meanwhile, Prince George’s County residents attend Cherokee Lane Elementary, Buck Lodge Middle and High Point High, all with C-minus grades from Niche.
Outdoorsy residents are within minutes of several public green spaces, including the 24-acre Hillandale Local Park along New Hampshire Avenue. This simple expanse invites athletes to compete on two baseball and softball diamonds, tennis courts and basketball courts. Hillandale’s westernmost residents can easily access the Northwest Branch Trail, featuring 21 miles of Anacostia River views. The Hillandale Swim & Tennis Association operates at the heart of the area, welcoming members to cool off in the pool or try their hand at pickleball and beach volleyball.
Convenient businesses and restaurants populate the Hillandale Shopping Center, directly west of the Swim & Tennis Association. If you plan to eat in, grab ingredients from the Safeway grocery store. When you want to celebrate a special event (or just the end of another day), visit restaurants like the Big Greek Café. This statewide chain welcomes patrons to fill up on Mediterranean classics and originals, including the tzatziki- and feta-topped Hercules Burger. Those craving Asian eats have two nearby options. Quickway Japanese Hibachi serves standards from spring rolls to bento boxes next door to the Big Greek Café. Across the street, Cheesesteak Mikes whips up unique Asian fusion concoctions like the bulgogi sub.
Willard says Hillandale is a popular spot for D.C. commuters, with a typical commute of around 30 minutes. And residents working in other DMV hubs can hop on the Capital Beltway, which runs alongside Hillandale to the south.
