‘Silicon Forest’ neighborhood teeming with activity
Tanasbourne was long ago home to a mall that shared the neighborhood’s namesake. While that institution was torn down just over three decades ago, the neighborhood found successors in the renown Streets of Tanasbourne open-air mall and the Tanasbourne Village and Tanasbourne Town Center shopping centers. It’s not uncommon today to see the walkways in the Streets of Tanasbourne bustling with shoppers, while bikers travel to work along the local network of trails. Most of Tanasbourne occupies a northeastern pocket of Hillsboro, with a small portion extending into the northwestern end of Beaverton. Tanasbourne’s appeal reflects much of the reasons many choose to live in Hillsboro. Tanasbourne and neighboring AmberGlen — which city officials often lump as one area — together have approximately 1.2 million square feet of commercial office space that house companies involved in fields like health care, software and technology and sports apparel. “We call it the ‘Silicon Forest.’ There are many good paying jobs,” says Patrick Preston, spokesman for the city of Hillsboro. “There are great economic opportunities, and that’s what allows people to get a footing and to make a decision about staying here permanently.” In addition to the myriad of community activities and destinations, Hillsboro — and by extension Tanasbourne — is considered well placed on a more regional scale, especially for those looking for weekend adventures away from the greater Portland area. Both the Oregon coast and Mount Hood, one of the state’s most iconic landmarks, are located no more than a couple hours away. “I think there are great shopping opportunities, lots of restaurants and employment opportunities in the area. Sizable apartments and world class health care. And then with AmberGlen, specifically, you have a draw with the park that’s there,” Preston says. “There’s so much around us within a quick drive. You can have the urban experience on a daily basis, and then drive and feel completely removed in the countryside. We’re in a really advantageous position to do a lot.”

The Streets of Tanasbourne
The neighborhood’s shopping centers provide extensive options, from home goods shops, bookstores and clothing stores to pizzerias. Within the Streets of Tanasbourne, popular night time hangouts include the Thirsty Lion Gastropub, where patrons can enjoy pub fare, some beers and catch up on sports at the elegant, dark wood bar. Right across the street is a similar, albeit more Western themed, establishment in the Rock Wood Fired Pizza. And like elsewhere in the Hillsboro area, there are cultural options like Sushi Town in the Tanasbourne Town Center. Trader Joe’s within the Tanasbourne Village offers a neighborhood grocery shopping option.

Ride on the Rock Creek Trail and greenway
The recreational destinations and green spaces located either in Tanasbourne or within reasonable proximity balance out the neighborhood’s high concentration of commercial activities. Those looking for scenic greenway runs and bike rides through a mix of meadows and woodlands can take to Rock Creek Trail near the heart of the neighborhood. While not all sections of it are connected, the path runs a total distance of 8 miles. Other recreational spaces here include Evergreen Park, which features a bark-covered playground, open green spaces and a network of paths that wind through dense sections of towering firs. Children and teens can find more fun at the Somerset West Swim Center just north of Tanasbourne. Then just outside of the neighborhood bounds is the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex, a 90-plus acre multisport venue that is a destination for local softball, football, baseball and lacrosse players. Its notable facilities include the 7,000-seat Hillsboro Stadium, home to the Portland State Vikings football and the women’s soccer teams.

Close to Hillsboro’s annual festivities
Tanasbourne residents are close to Hillsboro’s signature festivities. They include Lightopia, a half-mile drive through Gordon Faber Recreation Complex to enjoy Holiday season light displays. There’s the Pride Party at Jerry Willey Plaza in June to kick off Pride Month. Jerry Willey Plaza also hosts OrenKoFest in early fall, the city’s family harvest festival. Activities include a beer stein holding contest and goers dancing while decked out in traditional Bavarian wear. Tanasbourne’s shopping centers are the main sites for the more neighborhood centric events. They include a St. Patrick’s Day celebration at the Thristy Lion Gastropub, where authentic Irish dancers and bagpipe performers complement the celebratory meals and beer tastings.
