A suburban enclave 2 miles from Kingston

Located just 2 miles from Uptown Kingston’s vibrant streets and lively restaurant scene, Hillside is a quiet suburban community scattered along steep rolling hills. Boasting views of the Hudson River and its meandering creeks below, the neighborhood is best known for its tranquil tree-lined streets, spacious lots with single-family homes and the exclusive Wiltwyck Golf Club. “This is one of the higher-end, suburban neighborhoods around the city,” says Alex Stier, an experienced associate broker with Keller Williams Realty, Hudson Valley North, and former local business owner. The neighborhood is just outside Kingston’s city limits, but local students are still zoned to Kingston City schools, and residents often head down the hill to enjoy all that Kingston has to offer.

Afternoons on the green at Wiltwyck

Wiltwyck Golf Club sits along the western edge of Hillside. In addition to an 18-hole course, Witwyck features pickleball and tennis courts where members can practice their swing with a certified instructor. The Table at Wiltwyck serves up a range of upscale American fare like burrata burgers and filet mignon, and food is available for poolside delivery. About 2 miles away, Callabar Swim & Tennis Club is another members-only club offering youth summer camps where arts and crafts, swimming and tennis take centerstage. Additional nearby green spaces include Forsyth Park, where sports courts, a castle-themed playground and a nature center attract locals of all ages. The nature center offers year-round programs where kids can learn about the environment and explore the great outdoors through hiking, kayaking and fishing trips. Additional amenities include an animal exhibit and butterfly and wildflower gardens. Besides summer camps, the nature center is home to various farm animals and an eye-catching resident peacock. The center hosts kid-friendly events like outdoor movie nights and family fun days. Access to the great outdoors is a major draw for Hillside and Kingston metro area residents. “The Hudson Valley’s motto is from the mountains to the river,” Stier says. “You have the Hudson River to the east and the expansive Catskills to the west.” Residents are just 1 mile from the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, one of the many nearby trails that run beside old railroad tracks and weave along the river. A short drive west leads to additional wooded mountain hiking paths and flat terrain around the expansive Ashokan Reservoir.

Streets seeping with creativity

The Wiltwyck Golf Club hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Fundraisers for local charities and annual golf tournaments use the club’s well-known course and expansive banquet hall. The club’s restaurant, The Table at Wiltwyck, features live music on its outdoor patio every Thursday at 6 p.m. and is open to both members and the public. Hillside residents can enjoy a range of festivities in the heart of Kingston, just 2 miles away. “We have something going on almost every weekend,” Stier says. Music seeps into Uptown’s streets weekly as musicians jam out at local restaurants. Creatives unite at events like the Rondout Music Festival along the Hudson River waterfront in August. In the fall, the largest open studio tour in the Valley lets residents peruse local artist’s home studios and galleries. Then there’s the iconic Annual Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby, where the city’s creativity is on display as attendees race down the Broadway hill in eclectic, non-motorized but mobile sculptures that range from swimming turtles to renditions of Oscar the Grouch.

Spacious single-family homes on steep hills

Steep rolling hills give way to 20th-century homes on tidy, roomy lots. Properties sit back from quiet roads, offering ample yard space for blooming gardens. Split-levels stand tall next to sprawling ranch-style homes and are priced from the upper $200,000s to the upper $500,000s. Colonial Revivals with attached two-car garages are scattered in between, along with the occasional 1980s midcentury modern design. These properties can sell from the mid $400,000s to the mid $700,000s. Spacious New Traditionals, houses on large lots, or those that offer sweeping views of Kingston can sell into the upper $900,000s. Backyards are large enough for the occasional inground pool and patio, while canopied streets offer shade on sweltering summer days. Although there are no sidewalks, residents can safely walk throughout the neighborhood. Hillside boasts a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

Upscale eateries and casual cafes in Uptown

Residents don’t have to travel far for world-class cuisine. Along Lucas Avenue, Di Bella’s is one of the few beloved restaurants hidden away from the bustle of Uptown and Downtown Kingston. Gourmet entrees like linguini con le cozze, consisting of fresh mussels sauteed in white wine, complement its romantic atmosphere. Di Bella’s also serves Italian classics like mouthwatering calzones and fettuccine alfredo. Lucas Avenue leads to Uptown Kingston, where upscale restaurants, casual cafes and cocktail bars are housed in colorful rowhomes along Wall Street. Front Street Tavern features an elevated menu paired with casual options like the smash burger. “We also have rooftop concerts on Wednesdays and offer cooking classes,” says Antonio Giaccio, co-owner of Front Street Tavern, where patrons can learn how to make authentic pasta, ravioli and pizza. Hoffman House’s 1679 circa stone building offers a cozy and intimate setting for date nights. “Le Canard Enchaine and Cleo are some of the best upscale restaurants around,” says Sean Zimmerman, associate broker at Halter Associates Realty Inc., who has been helping homeowners sell their homes for over 20 years. Uptown Kingston is a regional shopping destination with boutiques, bookstores and art galleries. “It used to be where you’d buy your Levis back in the day,” Zimmerman says. Today, shops like Hamilton & Adams sell “country-style clothes for city folks,” Stier notes. A few blocks away, Rought Draft Bar & Books is a bookstore, coffee shop and bar housed in one of the four pre-revolutionary stone buildings that make up the city’s iconic Four Corners. Hillside residents are about 2 miles from Uptown’s Hannaford, while box stores like Target and Sam’s Club are about 5 miles north along New York State Route 9W.

Winding backroads and the NY State Thruway

Hillside is a car-dependent community, and the nearest Ulster County Area Transit bus stop is about 1 mile away in Uptown Kingston. Due to the neighborhood’s proximity to Interstate 87, better known as the NY State Thruway, some homeowners may hear ongoing traffic from their backyards. Interstate 87 connects residents to Albany International Airport, about 65 miles north, and to the heart of Manhattan, about 100 miles south. Residents are also just 4 miles from HealthAlliance Hospital.
