Known among locals as “Country living at its best,” Hilmar-Irwin lives up to the nickname, with farms surrounding the whole community. Almond orchards and lush fields thrive in this Central Valley area, home to about 6,000 residents. “It’s a small town and a great place to live. Dairy farms and the Hilmar Cheese Company
During the early 1900s, many dairy farms took root in Hilmar-Irwin, and the industry remains strong to this day. Founded in 1984 by 12 dairy families, the Hilmar Cheese Company is the community’s best-known attraction and farm. People can visit to learn about cows, the production of cheese and. there’s an ice cream making tour on Saturdays. The farm also has a deli that specializes in grilled cheese, as well as a cheese and wine shop.

Retail on Lander Avenue
Lander Avenue, centrally located and the community's main thoroughfare, is the largest shopping area in town. There are fast-food spots along Lander, but there are some local restaurants too, like Hot Rod Diner. This casual breakfast joint has some fun touches like dozens of license plates decorating the walls and retro bar stools with flame designs. Portuguese businesses in the area reflect the large Portuguese population. The Hilmar Portuguese Bakery is a family-owned business that sells Portuguese sweet bread and cookies, and the Portuguese Fish Market is attached to the bakery. Historic, midcentury and new construction homes in Hilmar-Irwin
Lander Avenue divides the town into eastern and western halves. On the east side, there are a handful of grid-style blocks featuring historic homes from the 1920s. These include Craftsman bungalows ranging from $300,000 to $400,000. From there, the town expands with subdivisions of midcentury homes, predominantly ranch-style houses that are priced from $400,000 to $500,000. Hilmar-Irwin has also grown recently, with subdivisions of new construction on its north side. Many of these have Mediterranean accents like tiled roofs and stucco exteriors. These range from $600,000 to $800,000. Most of the houses have yards large enough for garden beds or a backyard pool. Newer houses often have attached garages and driveways, but some of the historic homes have detached garages instead.

At Hilmar-Irwin's centrally located community pool, residents can go swimming and then eat lunch at shaded picnic tables in a park area. Hagaman Park, only 3 miles away in Livingston, offers a playground with a swing set, picnic tables and a swimming beach on the Merced River. About 10 miles south of Hilmar-Irwin, Great Valley Grasslands State Park features a boat launch and walking trails in the largest connecting wetlands in the state of California. Many visitors fish and swim in the San Joaquin River, which runs through the state park.

Private events can be booked at Hilmar Grange Hall, where people can celebrate weddings, family reunions and quinceañeras in a venue large enough for over 400 people.

Hilmar-Irwin is a car-dependent community. It’s about 25 miles northwest of downtown Merced via state Route 99. This highway can also take locals to Modesto and Fresno. Hilmar-Irwin is also 5 miles south of Turlock, which is a bigger town with a Main Street-style business district and more entertainment. Those who practice can visit the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, located in the northern part of Hilmar-Irwin, and there are more churches throughout the community. The closest hospital is the Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, about 10 miles north of the community. The closest airport is the Gustine Municipal Airport, located 15 miles away, while the closest major airport is Fresno Yosemite International Airport. It’s about 80 miles away.
