A rural community between state Routes 18 and 169
Cedar Grove in Hobart is a rural community in King County. “It’s tacked right up against the mountains and is really, really pretty,” says Dawn Rushton, real estate broker with Dawn Rushton Real Estate Group. She's a long-time area resident and has been a broker since 1984.
Cedar Grove is particularly convenient because it’s located between two highways, state Routes 18 and 169. Hobart, which is on the Cedar River, is near the city limits of Maple Valley, which has a population of about 28,000. “Hobart has its own post office, but they still have mailing addresses for Maple Valley,” Rushton says.

Cedar Grove real estate: vintage and brand new
Space and privacy are expected with Cedar Grove real estate. Lots are usually larger than an acre; some are over 20 acres. Though there’s an older home here and there, most vintage homes in Cedar Grove date to the 1960s to 1980s and are priced from the mid-$300,000s to the high-$900,000s. Styles include ramblers, cottages and manufactured homes.
Spacious contemporary, traditional and custom-designed homes date to the 2000s through 2020s. These are typically priced from $1 million to $1.9 million. Properties may include outbuildings like greenhouses, barns, sheds and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Possible add-ons include patios, dog runs, pools and hot tubs. Luxury estates in gated communities like The Ridge at Lake Webster are priced from $2.7 to $3.5 million.
Large older homes often sit on spacious tree covered properties.

Royal Arch Park, Lake Francis Park and a river trail
Royal Arch Park is a well-used private park by the river. It was created by the Royal Arch Masons Association of King County and is associated with a non-profit that partners with community organizations. The park has log shelters and is a rentable venue for community programs, scout camps and family events. “In the summertime, almost every day is booked; we’re busy from June until the middle of November,” says the park board president, Jeff Long. The biggest draw is the Haunted Forest of Maple Valley, an indoor/outdoor Halloween season attraction. “A little over 10,000 attend,” Long says. Choices are the “full fright show” or the family walk, held in daylight hours.
Another outdoor space in Cedar Grove is Lake Francis Park. People visit to picnic, play baseball or birdwatch. Less than 2 miles from the park is the lake, shallow and without public access. On the west side of Cedar Grove, adjacent to state Route 169, there’s a portion of the Cedar River Trail. The trail stretches more than 17 miles from Landsburg to Lake Washington in Renton.

Highway access, buses and Maple Valley Park & Ride
Getting on major roads can be easier here than in densely populated areas with more stop signs and traffic lights. Having a highway on two sides of Cedar Grove makes accessibility even simpler. “Even if you feel like you're out in the sticks, you have access to Highway 18, which then can take you to I-90 that takes you to Seattle and Bellevue,” Rushton says. From Cedar Grove, the drive to Bellevue is about 22 miles, and to Seattle, it’s about 27 miles.
Buses don't travel Cedar Grove's interior rural roads, but King County and DART buses stop in Maple Valley. The Maple Valley Park & Ride is on Black Diamond Road Southeast, adjacent to SR-169.
Hobart has limited retail, but there’s more in Maple Valley
There aren’t regular retail shops in Cedar Grove; businesses based here include kennels, farms and landscaping suppliers. Crystal Creek Tree Farm is open during the Christmas season. Families pick out a “U-cut” tree; the kids can play hide-and-seek among the rows upon rows of firs. Crystal Creek has a train and offers rides with family photos. Enchanted Winds, another seasonal Christmas tree farm, has a gift barn and complimentary cookies and hot cider.
Several miles east of Cedar Grove is the Hobart Post Office and Hobart Food Market, a family owned grocery store and gas station. To the south, close to where the highways cross, there’s Foley’s Produce, a large farm stand that supplies in-season vegetables all year except during the winter. Rainier Valley Coffee, Maple Valley Market and Cascadia Pizza are among the other businesses. South of the river, Maple Valley has more stores and restaurants. People take advantage of the late hours at The Lost Dutchman Sports Bar, a popular spot for its pool tables, karaoke and live music nights. There is Shawn's Quality Meats & Smokehouse and a QFC grocery store.
