Rural Neighborhood in Texas
Brazoria County 77515
Holidays Lakes is a small, relatively flat neighborhood where the bottomland riparian forests of the Brazos River Basin meet the 70,000 acres of the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. Surfside Beach on the Gulf of Mexico is a 28-mile drive south, and Houston City, with its dynamic economy and world-class medical system, is just 45 miles north. The subtropical climate and low-lying landscape make for hot and humid summers and mild winters in Holiday Lakes, and the entire neighborhood was classified as being on the floodplain by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
This is a rural area, and homes are spread far apart on wide and grassy lots covered by live oaks and pecan trees. Herons, hawks, foxes and bobcats roam the backwoods, avoiding the occasional neighborhood dog straying far from home. In planned subdivisions such as Planter's Point, 6-acre plots are listed for under $90,000. At the top of the market, 200-acre parcels are available for under $5 million. Construction is underway in these subdivisions, with new three- to four-bedroom millennium mansions with Tudor accents selling for under $300,000.
As its name suggests, Holiday Lakes was built around five lakes. But when asked if they're suitable for swimming, Cindy Clark, the Holiday Lakes City Secretary for the last 15 years, says, "Not unless they like swimming with alligators." Regarding recreation, "There's no hunting inside city limits," she says. "Some people do fish, but most go down to Freeport to the beaches to recreate." Holiday Lake City Park is a large grassy field with a small playground, but the 80-acre Brazos River County Park is just outside town. Bordered by a subdivision of homes and the Brazos River, the park has a raised woodland trail and a large playscape.
The two main places to eat and drink are owned by the same couple. The Watering Hole and The Hitching Post are where you'll get a cold drink and meet your neighbors if you live here. The Trading Post has a smattering of grocery items, and Holiday Lakes Baptist Church is the only religious establishment in town. "It may be a big county," says Better Medrano, bartender at The Watering Hole, "but it feels small because everybody knows each other." Residents looking for more can drive 5 miles east to Angleton. There, you'll find an HEB supermarket, a Walmart and a large selection of chain restaurants and local businesses. Route 288 runs through Angleton and leads north to Houston and South to the Gulf of Mexico.
Holiday Lakes is in the Angleton Independent School District, which received an A-minus on the school rankings website Niche. Frontier Elementary School received an A and offers students a gifted and talented pathway. Angleton Junior High School received a B grade and has a student-to-teacher ratio of 16 to one. Angleton High School also received a B, offers AP classes, and is the culmination of the district's gifted and talented program. Living in a town of 1,000 people isn't for everyone, but Betty Medrano says, "I wouldn't live anywhere else."
