No stoplights on the way home

Waterside, Arcadian living: it’s what Holland, Massachusetts does best. This rustic enclave hugs the shoreline of the Hamilton Reservoir, the beating heart of this boating and water-skiing community. The singular, winding Holland Road is right off Interstate 84, lined with long driveways of heavily wooded, private properties. “The speed limit on the main road through town is 30 miles an hour," says Billie Jean Petrie Rubio, a Realtor with RE/MAX in the Springfield area. "There's not even a stoplight in Holland. There’s no need since there’s really only a few roads around the reservoir." With a little over 2,000 people calling Holland home, this expansive waterfront neighborhood offers seclusion within an hour's drive of Boston, Hartford and Worcester.

Bidding wars for scenic views

The two-lane roads of Holland veer off onto private, residential streets where many locals dwell in the privacy of the pines. Whether it be a ranch-style, colonial or a Cape Cod home, prospective homebuyers may be hard-pressed to find and secure a property. “The inventory here is very low,” Rubio says. “You’ll see multiple offers on a home, which often leads to a bidding war.” Homes are typically priced around $300,000 but can easily reach upward of $635,000 depending on views of the reservoir. "The lake definitely drives up prices," Rubio says. “It’s a good idea to be on top of what becomes available and jump on the opportunity.”

Summers at Hamilton Reservoir

Summers at Hamilton Reservoir attract swimmers, canoes, kayaks, boat docks and the Aqua Riders of Holland, a water ski club that performs Friday night shows. Joggers often frequent the Quinebaug River Canoe Trail near Holland Pond and Lake Siog Park, and South of Holland is Nipmuck State Forest, with over 30 miles of forested trails. Bigelow Hollow State Park’s Pond offers rainbow trout fishing and island sandbars accessible by kayak or canoe. A short 3-mile drive up Sturbridge Road, locals practice their swing at Hemlock Ridge Golf Course.

Pizza and microbrews at Holland’s Maine Attraction

Seven miles away is the Center at Hobbs Brook off Charlton Road, which is home to Walmart and a few chain restaurants. Halfway between Sturbridge and Southbridge is Sturbridge Plaza, offering Walmart, and Teddy G's, a popular hangout for pizza and microbrews. For last-minute pantry needs, folks depend on New Holland Market, right next door to Holland’s only restaurant, humorously named Holland’s Maine Attraction. Neighbors end up seeing each other on the weekends, Rubio says, and admits he frequents it regularly himself. The locals know it for Giffords ice cream, lobster rolls and outdoor waterfront seating. Beside it sits PJ’s, the town’s one and only watering hole. The Traveler Restaurant is just across the border into Connecticut and off Goodhall Pond, popular for hamburgers, steaks and seafood.

Connecting the community one Zucchini at a time

While more popular events can be found in nearby Boston or Hartford, Holland still finds ways to connect the community. The Zucchini Festival is held at Holland Community Center near the cemetery off Brimfield Road. Over the summer, multiple Bass Fishing tournaments and group canoe and kayaking events take place along Hamilton Reservoir. Locals will find themed and antique stores, such as Sadie Green's Curiosity Shop near Old Sturbridge Village, a recreated 1830s settlement staffed with a costumed cast just 5 miles north. On Sundays, the Sturbridge Farmers Market brings Holland families to Sturbridge Town Common off Main Street.

21 miles from UConn

Families of Holland enjoy the highly-rated Tantasqua Regional School District’s low student-teacher ratio of 9 to 1. Holland’s youngest can attend Holland Elementary School with a B-minus Niche. About 8 miles north are Tantasqua Regional Junior and Tantasqua High Schools, earning A-minus and A ratings from Niche, respectively. The latter is home to Cornerstone Café, a student-run restaurant on campus managed by hospitality management students in the front and culinary arts students in the back. High school graduates can consider the University of Connecticut for continuing education, which is only 21 miles away.

Privacy in Holland comes at a price

A private vehicle is essential in Holland to commute around the surrounding villages of Brimfield, Brookfield, Sturbridge and Wales. Almost everything can be accessed by way of Wilbur Cross Highway, also known as Interstate 84. The town sits right on the Massachusetts and Connecticut border. However, privacy and seclusion also mean many essentials are farther away. The closest public airport is Worcester Regional Airport, which is 27 miles away. UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Hospital is about 9 miles away in Southbridge for immediate healthcare assistance. Worcester is about 26 miles away and takes roughly an hour to get to.
