Supporting local businesses along Saginaw Street
Downtown Holly attracts small business owners, antique enthusiasts and history buffs to join its growing community. The town was founded in 1836, and locals can see that history down Battle Alley with the historic shops, but current residents keep the city growing with fun annual events and popular shopping destinations. “I would say that Holly is a quaint community with a rich history that has a lot to offer everyone,” says Amber Rowan, a partner and Realtor with the Ruth Andrews & Amber Rowen Team in the Independent Broker Network. “It has a wonderful downtown main street. You’re also just minutes away from two state parks.” Locals can stop by The Vintage Farm House to shop from local vendors and find antiques. After a day exploring local antique stores, residents fuel up at popular eateries like the Bittersweet Cafe or Red Devil Restaurant. Everyone comes out every winter for the Holly Dickens Festival, also known as one of the longest-running holiday festivals in Michigan. Downtown Holly is a small town with many activities for locals to join in on.

Antiquing at The Vintage Farm House
Residents enjoy multiple popular dining options throughout Downtown Holly, which offer a variety of cuisines and culinary experiences. The Blackthorn Pub serves local beers and Irish American dishes like Shepherd’s Pie. “And Holly Cafe is a great place to get a sandwich, but they also have a packed gluten-free menu,” Krupansky says. She also highlights the popular Bittersweet Cafe for its menu of soups and sandwiches and Mike’s Coney Island for family dining.
When it comes to shopping, residents have a wide range of options. Krupansky’s own The Vintage Farm House sells antiques and items made by local vendors. She also owns the Blue Willow Exchange, which carries similar items for shoppers to browse. Residents drive north to pick up groceries at Holly Foods Supermarket. Some might pop into the Dollar Tree on North Saginaw Street for last-minute essentials.

Over 50 years of Holly Dickens Festival celebrations
Right after Thanksgiving, the Holly Dickens Festival kicks off. The annual event, filled with a holiday parade, Tiny Tim Children's Tent and Santa train, lasts for three weeks and has been a local tradition for over 50 years. “They also just put on a Harry Potter event in Battle Alley. People really enjoyed that, so I’m sure they’ll do it again,” says Misty Krupansky, owner of The Vintage Farm House and the Blue Willow Exchange. Krupansky also mentions locals get out for the annual Spring Shop Hop event to support businesses in the area. Ladies Night Out events in the spring and fall also get women out for a night on the town.
Classic home styles and room to grow
Multi-family units and single-family homes sit scattered throughout the downtown area. Bungalows with wide front porches, Queen Anne-inspired homes with uncovered parking and homes with simple national designs greet residents as they drive around. Home prices often range from $175,000 to $400,000. Some new developments are popping up, and available lots can sell for under $250,000. “I’ve lived here for over 14 years, and I’d say it’s grown exponentially since I moved here,” Krunpansky says. Some streets feature skinny paved sidewalks for locals to use when going for a run or walking their dogs, but most are sidewalk-free, giving homeowners more yard space to enjoy. Residents also park their cars on uncovered driveways or use detached garages.

The Holly High Band has traveled the country
Parents often send their kids to Holly Elementary School before they move on to Holly Middle School. Holly High School is the natural next step. Teens might try out for the Branco Marching Band, which has traveled across the country to perform at events such as the half-time show at the 2018 college football Alamo Bowl. All three schools get a B-minus from Niche. Parents might also enroll their elementary-aged and middle school students at Holly Academy, a public charter school that receives an A-minus.
