100 years of existence
In 2023, the Liberia neighborhood in Hollywood, Florida, celebrated its 100th anniversary. “It’s a historic neighborhood and one of the oldest and earliest in South Florida,” says Grayson Adler, a Realtor and managing broker with First Florida Realty with about ten years of real estate experience. The original residents of Liberia were exclusively Black in the times of segregation. While the neighborhood today has some homes close to a century old, there’s now a mix of people living in this neighborhood located just south of the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

“Opportunity zones”
While most homes are from the 1950s through the ‘70s, there are pockets of new construction in the mix with the older models. “Sporadically, this neighborhood is experiencing infill construction,” Adler says. “That’s when, primarily, investors see a home in disrepair, demolish it, and build an entirely new house. Sometimes they’re called opportunity zones, where there are tax incentives to build that property.” The price range of the houses in Liberia is mostly between $350,000 and $550,000, with some of the newer homes approaching $600,000. “It’s more affordable than other areas of Broward County, where the median is around $600,000,” Adler says. Ranch-style, Craftsman and modest bungalows and cottages are the primary styles in the neighborhood. Living space can be under 1,000 square feet and up to 2,000. “The affordability and the lack of an HOA means that when homes go up for sale, there’s not much time before they’re swept up,” Adler says.

Historic school in the neighborhood
Today, it’s known as Attucks Middle School, but it used to be Attucks High School, one of the few exclusively Black high schools in the area. The high school had its last graduating class in 1968, and then integration meant the school changed to Attucks Middle School. Today, children living in Liberia can attend the B-minus Niche-rated school. Students at the school can take TV production classes where they can research, write and produce newscasts daily. Mary M. Bethune Elementary is also in the neighborhood and is a magnet school for the performing arts, specializing in theater, art and dance. The school gets a C grade overall. With a 97% graduation rate, South Broward High School is rated a B-plus on Niche with high marks for clubs and activities and the college preparation students receive.
Attucks Middle school is a well regarded institution by the residents in Liberia.

Community center
One of the recreation options in Liberia is a mix of indoor and outdoor activities at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Charleston Street. There’s a playground and multiple basketball courts outside and youth programs inside. During the King holiday weekend in January, the center hosted a tribute concert on Friday night, a community celebration on Saturday with live music and a bounce house for the kids. Oakwood Hills Park is a quiet retreat alongside the canal with paved walking trails and plenty of trees and benches.

Shopping mecca to the west
Along Oakwood Boulevard, south of Stirling Road, there are popular box stores lined on either side of the road along I-95. The Home Depot, Burlington, Old Navy and BJ’s Wholesale Club are some of the stores in this area. There are first-run movies playing at the Regal Oakwood and there’s a retro atmosphere along with classic diner food at the Moonlite Diner. Breakfast is served all day. For an actual old-fashioned experience, there’s also seating at the counter on round-seat stools. Grocery store options include Publix, ALDI and Sprouts Farmers Market.

Just 3 miles from the beach and the airport
Traveling east on Sheridan Street, it’s only minutes to Hollywood Beach and the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean. About the same distance to the north is the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Broward County Transit bus stops are all along Sheridan Street to lead to the shore. The routes on Dixie Highway can lead to the airport. There are also stops on Stirling Road. I-95 is just west of the Liberia neighborhood and can have commuters in downtown Miami in about 20 miles. The Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport stop at Dania Beach Station for the Tri-Rail commuter train is just 3 miles to the northwest.
