Modern charms and a classic small-town feel
The quaint life of a small town’s main street gets a contemporary flair in Downtown Homewood. Beloved businesses, recreational spaces and a 25-mile ride out to the Windy City are key to the experience here. “It’s a welcoming and diverse community here in Homewood. We have tons of activities for all ages, largely thanks to the outstanding Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, and there are a number of events that bring community members together, like our farmers markets,” says Vicki Stevenson, a local real estate agent with eXp Realty. Stevenson has sold real estate for more than 15 years and moved to the Homewood-Flossmoor area after years of visiting her family in town over the summers.
Comics, ladies' fashions and empanadas
Locally owned shops and restaurants lend the area a distinctive Homewood flair. Anjel’s Boutique specializes in ladies’ evening wear and refined outfits. Next door, home décor, bath items and accessories are some of the offerings for sale at The Villager Gift Shop. Right across Dixie Highway, Zone Comics and Games hosts regular tabletop gaming events between shelves of the latest issues from Marvel, DC and the independent comic scene. Stops for groceries close by include Walt’s Food Center and Jewel-Osco.
The menu at Empanadus focuses on doing one thing well: Argentinian-style empanadas. The shop offers more than 15 fillings, and popular flavors like sausage, beef, and chicken have their names pressed into the shell so guests know exactly what to expect from a box full of different flavors. A neon blue-lit bar and contemporary surroundings set the tone at Asian Harbor, a sit-down spot with a sushi bar, Chinese-American favorites and other Asian-fusion selections. Pulled pork sandwiches, beer-battered cod and baby back ribs are some of the menu highlights at Twisted Q Barbeque Bar & Grill, a laid-back restaurant with checkerboard tile on the ground, Cubs and Bulls memorabilia on the walls and a well-stocked bar behind the main counter.
