Laid-back original Honolulu suburb evolving into hip, trendy hub
Living in Kaimuki, on the mountainside of Diamond Head in Honolulu, residents enjoy eclectic local retailers and restauranteurs that are all considered "ohana," or family. From boutique apparel to artisanal pet treats and craft brews, Kaimuki brims with a bevy of cultural delights. As one of Honolulu's first planned neighborhoods, the community maintains suburban charm, while hip new havens join old-school standbys — making Kaimuki one of Honolulu's trendiest hotspots. Says Pam Maeda, a Certified Residential Specialist and top producer with Marcus Realty, who is a resident of Honolulu raised in Kaimuki, "Locals don't go into Waikiki for restaurants; we go to Kaimuki. There's a social lifestyle here that hasn't been commercialized. You can go have your coffee and then transition into a bar or a brick oven pizza place. It's very pet-friendly and walkable. Malia Obama used to work in Kaimuki, and everyone knew about it, but it wasn't a thing. We're just not touristy here; it's very laid back."
Less than 5 miles from downtown Honolulu, which locals call "town," 3 miles from the world's largest open-air mall and 2 miles from Diamond Head and Waikiki beaches, Kaimuki keeps residents close to work, retail and recreation. Surfboards on cars and yoga mats under arms are common as locals make their way to their favorite places, but high-rises and big-box stores are outside of the neighborhood.
Maeda adds, "In Kaimuki, you can live a quiet, ritualistic life where you go get coffee and pick up fresh bread at this amazing bakery, The Breadshop. Or, you can go discover something new every day."
Koko Head Cafe is usually jam-packed throughout the weekk.
Locals frequent the farmer's market on Saturdays for fresh produce and artisanal goods.

Famous burgers at W&M, candy at Kaimuki Crack Seed
Central Waialae Avenue bustles with lively mainstays and newbies. Says Maeda, "People line up in the parking lot of W&M Burger for the few menu items they've been selling for more than 60 years. It has this cult-like following. People go there after the beach or work for these amazing burgers soaked in their famous sauce and a neon Green River drink that's just a ridiculous beverage that's loved in Hawaii."
Bean About Town is a top choice for lattes, and Moke's Bread and Breakfast serves up pancakes and Loco Mocos. Sunday brunchers head to Koko Head Café for omelets and mimosas. Kaimuki's signature pick-me-up is found at the iconic Kaimuki Crack Seed Store — a mom-and-pop staple since the 1950s, specializing in savory preserved fruit and candies. Maeda adds, "A stone's throw from the Seed Store is Jose's, a Mexican restaurant that's stayed original. People have been going there for chips and salsa to watch the game since the 1970s."
Actively preserving Kaimuki's small-town charm, the grassroots Keep it Kaimuki organization links businesses and patrons together through a collaborative online directory and Keep It Kaimuki merch. "Keep It Kaimuki Saturday" treats shoppers to exclusive deals and discounts from local stores on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
"There's an intentional preservation of a lifestyle in Kaimuki," explains Maeda, "that's gently evolving. The food is trendsetting, pet stores are bougie, and even the liquor store has the best prices and the biggest collection around. You can rent a small storefront in Kaimuki and turn it into a vertical brand that goes viral on Instagram. And yet Kaimuki knows how to hold on to what's special." In the heart of Kaimuki, the Times Market is a Hawaii stalwart for local Asian-inspired goods, or residents can stock up at Foodland Market City a mile west and Whole Foods a mile east.
Kaimuki residents head to Crackseed for locally made treats.
Brew'd Craft Pub offers delectable menu items for lunch and dinner.

Kapaolono Park swimming, Kaimuki Park pickleball
Residents head to Kapaolono Community Park on the southern end of Kaimuki for long walks or picnics overlooking the cityscape. The park's public swimming pool is a great spot to cool off amid a backdrop of Diamond Head scenery. On the neighborhood's northern end, there's a playground and sports courts in Maunalani Community Park, where hikers trek the sometimes-slippery steep inclines of Mau'umae Trail, rewarded with panoramic views of Kaimuki and the ocean. Pickleballers practice their skill on courts at Kaimuki Community Park.
Tennis courts and basketball courts can be found at Kapaoloni park.
Kaimuki residents can enjoy outdoor sports at one of many parks in the area.

Huge annual Christmas Parade
Locals gather yearly in Pu'Uo Kaimuki Mini Park for the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Maeda explains, "Our Christmas Parade is a big deal. We shut down Waialae Avenue, and the whole neighborhood gets involved. Kids, scouts, high school bands, even businesses. It starts at Chaminade and goes all the way from W&M Burger east to Koko Head Avenue."
Mostly renovated midcentury, some new construction homes
Homes in Kaimuki range from vintage midcentury, with classic features including plantation shutters, to newly constructed homes with modern amenities. Houses are often densely situated, and most lots are smaller. Many older homes have been completely renovated, and it's not uncommon for homeowners to be descendants of original owners. Condos are rare, asking around $430,000 in the 16-floor Kaimuki Jade. Nicely renovated single-family homes hover around $1 million and a 2021-build can ask $1.8 million.
Kaimuki has a variety of housing options, including single-family homes and apartments.
