Peaceful valley suburb with golf course and gardens near Fort Shaftner
Resting along the Koolau mountain slopes, Moanalua is a hillside gathering of several subdivisions within one suburban, inland neighborhood. Pam Maeda, Certified Residential Specialist and top producer with Marcus Realty, who grew up on Oahu, says, "Moanalua is known for being the most central. You can get to the main freeway in a minute, but you're in a valley where the freeway sound doesn't travel into it. You can get to the airport, military bases, shopping and till be surrounded by greenery. And there aren't a lot of streetlights to slow you down."
This close-knit and convenient community is primarily a blend of generational family residents and military personnel stationed at Fort Shafter or working at the Tripler Army Medical Center. Tripler is the largest of its kind in the Pacific and Asian Rim, locally dubbed the "big pink building on the hill." It was commissioned in the 1940s by military leadership to serve as a healing place for soldiers.
Moanalua also features a golf course, Hawaii's flagship Kaiser Permanente hospital, and the frequently photographed Hitachi tree. From a central corridor, locals can reach the Moanalua Shopping Center for errands and appointments just a few miles south.
Many residences in the Moanalua feature solar panels in order to live more sustainably.
Many of the homes in the Moanalua neighborhood are single-story family homes.

Moanlua Gardens' famous Hitachi tree
At the neighborhood's southern end, the Moanalua Gardens holds several significant trees, including a more-than-century-old Hitachi tree that attracts tourists worldwide. The City and County of Honolulu registers it as an Exceptional Tree that cannot be harmed or removed. Since the early 1970s, it's been the inspiration for Hitachi, Ltd.'s logo.
Golf is also a popular pastime in Moanalua, either at the semi-private nine-hole Moanalua Golf Course or the private Honolulu Country Club. Adds Maeda, "The Moanalua course has a very neighborhood vibe, and Honolulu Country Club can be pricey. Military personnel can play the Navy Marine course just south of here. And the Nagorski Golf Course on Fort Shafter is also military, but you can show your registration and complete some paperwork to play there as a civilian. If you just plan ahead, it's worth it. There's a bowling alley there, and it's a nice club for high-ranking officers."
The simple Moanalua Community Park under a highway interchange includes a fenced play area for dogs.
Moanalua is known for its vibrant green landscapes and diverse flora.

Townhouses under $1 million, single-family up to $1.6 million
The median price for homes in Moanalua hovers around $1.2 million, and options range from townhouses asking between $750,000 and $875,000 to golf course homes built in 2005 for between $1.4 million and $1.6 million. Adds Maeda, "Moanalua also has favorable zoning for building additions, and the parcels are usually large. You're a little more inland, so you're not there for ocean views, but you sit high, so you get mountain, valley and city views. It's hard for me to pick a more desirable area because you have these really beautiful homes right near everything, with no right-off-the-freeway feel."
Established streets curve around hillsides, often with sidewalks on both sides. Yards flourish with greenery and seasonal blooms, and many two-story homes are built into the slope to maximize views.
Because of its unique mix of proximity to so much of Oahu and a peaceful valley aura, Maeda says that homes rarely go on the market and can ask higher prices. "But," says Maeda, "you can find a fixer-upper and a $2 million home in this same neighborhood."
The Moanalua neighborhood is growing with new residential developments like Moanalua Village.
Newer homes can be found near the golf course in Salt Lake.

Mitch’s Fish Market and Moanalua Shopping Center
While the Moanalua community is all residential, locals can head 3 miles west toward Pearl Ridge or south toward the airport to dine out and shop. Says Maeda, "People here love the fish at Mitch's Fish Market and Sushi Bar. It's not fancy, and it's BYOB, but it's my most favorite hangout. The owner has drinks with his customers, and they have really great sashimi." The Moanalua Shopping Center, just south of the neighborhood, features fast-casual favorites such as Koa Pancake House and Jamba Juice.
Moanalua was also the site of Hawaii's first Costco in the Salt Lake community, bordering Moanalua. It's since moved to Iwilei and is now home to Target. Safeway and Long's are close together in Salt Lake for groceries and essentials, only about three miles outside Moanalua.
Moanalua Center is located just minutes away.

Residents quickly connect by car to the H-1 and H-3 via the neighborhood's H-201 border to reach the rest of Oahu. The Daniel K. Inouye Airport is about 8 miles from middle-Moanalua. Hawaii's award-winning public transit service, The Bus, offers stops outside the neighborhood along H-1, and the stop nearest to the Moanalua Gardens is a 2-minute walk away, on Puumalu Street.
