Hanover Township houses are on 2 or more acres, offering residents the privacy they want. People move here for its laid-back country lifestyle, caring community and woodlands to hunt and fish in. "Your neighbors might be waving from a few acres away, but they are always there for you,” says Susan Daniel, a Certified Negotiation Expert and Hanover local. She recalls a time when there was a snake on her porch and all she had to do was call someone and they "cleared it right up.”

Smack dab in the middle of this township is Racoon Creek State Park with its camping ground, 44-mile trail, and 101-acre lake for fishing and kayaking. Hidden within Racoon is a near-ancient spring running along an iron-rich cave wall. Locals say its water has healing properties. Stay the night at the park’s lakeside lodge or modern cabins when you’re seeking somewhere comfier than a tent.

Surrounding this park, you’ll find Hanover’s houses on their own patch of forest, secluded from neighbors. Cabins, mobile homes, new traditionals, ranch-style properties and farmhouses are standard here. You can find a two-bedroom property on 4 acres for around $170,000, a completely renovated three-bedroom on 3 acres for around $220,000, and a four-bedroom home with a pool for around $390,000. Glancing at a map of Hanover, the streets look like trees with barren branches. Country roads abound with woodland so leafy and dense in the spring and summer it hides deer within them. There may not be a large housing stock, but according to Daniel, homes sell quickly as soon as they’re listed.

Hanover’s students attend South Side Elementary School, South Side Middle School and South Side High School within the South Side Area School District. The elementary and middle schools earn a B-minus rating from Niche, while the high school scores a B rating. Every year, the school district celebrates alumni with a parade where former students show off their tractors in the parking lot of a nearby church. The middle school also participates in a youth-led ambassador program that protects mental health by raising awareness of the challenges of their peers.

Interstates 18, 30 and 168 cross through the township. The nearest airport is Pittsburgh International, 15 miles west via I-30, and the nearest hospital is Heritage Valley Health System, 21 miles north via I-18. There is no direct bus line connection from Hanover to Pittsburgh, but the city is 30 miles away via I-30. This is a car-dependent area, though you can also ride your motorcycle or tractor on public roads if you have one. “That's what most people run around in here. People also ride horses," Daniel says.

For fresh, seasonal vegetables all year long, visit Janoski's Farm and Greenhouse 9 miles from Hanover Township in Clinton. The first floor is all food, and the second floor contains a gift shop where you can buy toys, home decor, jewelry and more. Janoski’s also has a restaurant called Lu~Lou's where the menu changes daily and you can dine outside on farmland. In October, you can also catch a hayride at Janoski’s, giving you a fall festivity to look forward to. Beaver Valley Mall is 18 miles away from the township via I-168 south when you want more shopping choices, like Journey’s, Chik-Fil-A and JCPenney among other box stores. For more grocery options, head to Beaver Supermarket, known for its custom meats, located 20 miles away via I-168.

If you’re seeking a country lifestyle, look toward Hanover and find your own peaceful patch of woodland.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
