Outdoorsy with old-world charm
Founded in 1769, Hope Township is one of the earliest planned communities in the country and its history is still felt today – thanks to the numerous original structures and untamed greenery across its rural landscape. “It’s rural, but I like to call it distant suburban,” says John Kruk, Broker/Owner with RE/MAX Town and Valley and lifelong resident of Warren County. “It feels rural with it being so outdoorsy and close-knit, but you still have access to a lot.” Offering a side of New Jersey not often thought of, Hope Township provides a rural lifestyle that remains within 60 miles of New York City.
Traditional homes on lush lots
Houses in Hope Township reflect the historic character of the area, with many of the homes in the neighborhood being traditional, established styles. Prospective homebuyers will find Colonial Revivals, some of which feature Tudor accents, along with ranch styles and farmhouse homes. “Besides older traditional types, you also find a lot more custom builds in and around Hope,” says Kruk. “There are less housing developments, so there’s more stand-alone homes – usually on a few acres, at least.” Thanks to the spread-out nature of the area, homes sit on lots large enough for gardening, porches and driveways. Prices typically rise in accordance with the size of the home and the lot it sits on, ranging from $220,000 to $750,000. “Even with the more modern homes that have started to pop up, the area remains very older and established in personality,” says Jennifer Pickett, real estate agent with Compass Realty. “It still has that relaxed farmland feel to it.”
Small classes at Belvidere High
Students can begin at the Hope Township School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade and earns an A-minus from Niche. From there, students move on to C-plus-rated Belvidere High School. Students at Belvidere High can take advantage of small class sizes with a student-teacher ratio of 11-to-1 and choose clubs including the Spanish National Honor Society, ski club or the Belvidere Singers.
Commuting to NYC on I-80
Residents can travel the 60 miles to New York City on Interstate 80. U.S. Route 206 is also easily accessible and can take residents toward Pennsylvania. Public transportation is limited to bus and shuttle service, making cars a necessity. The Newark International Airport is 58 miles from Hope Township.
Shopping and dining in Hope Township
“Hope Township has a really cute little downtown area,” says Pickett. “Like the whole area, there’s a lot of history, but it also really reflects the agricultural nature of the township.” The Inn at Millrace Pond, just off Johnsonburg Road, is housed in what was once the Moravian Grist Mill, originally built in 1769. The inn’s restaurant is known for its rustic aesthetic and farm-to-table American cuisine. ShopRite and Acme are two nearby grocery options, though residents can also take advantage of local farmstands just outside the area’s active farms. While retail options are limited, residents can always make use of nearby highways to easily commute to Hackettstown – a popular option which features many chains and national retailers. The Land of Make Believe is a nearby amusement park with rides and a spray park.
Rolling hills and Jenny Jump State Forest
With its rolling hills and open farmlands, there’s plenty of room for appreciating nature. Swayze Mill Park, located on Country Road, offers visitors a place for catch-and-release bass fishing. One of the biggest attractions in all of Warren County is nearby Jenny Jump State Forest, where visitors can cross-country ski, hike trails or enjoy a weekend campout. During the winter months, Ghost Lake and Mountain Lake are two popular spots for ice skating.
Fishing Derby at Swayze Mill Park
Swayze Mill Park is home to the summer’s Fishing Derby, where residents come out for food, music and friendly competition. Every September, the park is also home to the annual town picnic – a sort of mini-fair with games, food trucks and more.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
