About Horn Lake, MS

About Horn Lake, MS

Residences, businesses and highways

A short drive south of Memphis on Interstate 55 leads to Horn Lake. As cars ride farther on Goodman Road into town, the commercial hotels, shops and restaurants appear in the rearview mirror and residential homes, parks and schools come into view. West of the area, Horn Lake blends with Mud Lake, which is split between the Mississippi and Tennessee borders. And with proximity to the Home of Blues, residents take advantage of all that the birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll has to offer—like Beale Street, the Memphis Zoo and Graceland. “Horn Lake is a very diverse community, close to downtown Memphis and minutes from shopping areas and interstates,” says Romond McClinton, a Realtor at Cyre-Leike with four years of real estate experience and 20 years of experience as a local barber. The city's CAP Index crime score is 4 out of 10, which is on par with the national median.

Ranch homes and new constructions

Horn Lake’s residential streets are typically quiet, with sidewalks and minimal trees to shade many of the homes’ small front lawns. There are ranch-style homes with brick accents, some with attached garages and driveways. Cape Cods and modern brick Craftsman styles sometimes come with multicar garages, private driveways and upwards of 2,000 square feet of living space. "In the western part of town, they’re building new homes at the Willow Point subdivision,” McClinton says. The median housing price in Horn Lake is around $230,000, which is significantly below the national median.

Easy commute via Interstate 55

Residents depend on cars for travel. Interstate 55 runs just east of the city, linking drivers to the excitement and nightlife of Memphis and to the nearby Memphis International Airport. The closest emergency room is the Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto, located on the eastern side of I-55.

Go-to eateries off the highway

Several restaurants, hotels and big-box stores are clustered along the interstate, including chains such as Cracker Barrel, Zaxby's and Home Depot. The Memphis Barbeque Company serves regional classics in a modern country setting. Farther down Goodman Road into town, A&A Cake Factory offers fresh-baked seasonal desserts and custom cakes. At the intersection of Goodman Road and U.S. Route 51, coined Bullfrog Corner, there are more restaurants and retail options. “Flights Fish and Wings has some of the best fish and chicken, and they do soul food Sundays, which is where a lot of people go after church,” McClinton says. Locals can also indulge in hamburgers and ice cream at Boomers, a community staple. And for groceries, people can stop by Kroger or Aldi along Goodman Road.

Fresh air and events at Latimer Park

On Goodman Road, M R Dye Public Library works with children and teens to improve literacy and desire to read through summer and community programs in both English and Spanish. A couple of miles south, Latimer Park offers a skatepark, disc golf, tennis courts, athletic fields, a playground and a walking trail around a small lake. The park also hosts several seasonal events, like the annual and free Magnolia Fest in May. “There’s always something going on at Latimer for the kids, and they also host a lot of charity walks and runs there,” McClinton says.

Outlet shopping and RV camping

Horn Lake residents hop onto Interstate 55 and head a few miles south to the Tanger Outlets Southaven outlet mall, where they can shop for brand-name clothing and accessories. A couple of miles east of town is Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp Resort, where campers enjoy daily events and activities like an outdoor pool, sports courts and pedal carts. Nearby, travelers stop at the EZ Daze RV Park. Elvis Presley’s former home — the Circle G Ranch — is off Goodman Road in town, where the historic 154-acred site is overgrown but celebrated, nonetheless.
