Founded in the 1800s by French fur traders, the St. Joseph community of Houlton, Wisconsin, quickly became a popular, thriving destination for settlers. The area's historic past is still evident in its many well-preserved buildings and homes, many of which date back to the 19th century. The architectural style of houses in the community is a blend of old and new. Historic homes with timeless charm sit near new developments, offering single-story and two-story options. Streets are lined with tree-canopied roads and residents often enjoy spacious yards. There’s also a mix of Craftsman, Tudor and Cape Cod, typically characterized by their simple lines, gabled roofs and porches. The price range of houses in the Houlton area is $250,000 to $500,000, with some custom-builds valued at over $1 million. Residents typically get a quarter of an acre to an acre of land when they buy a house in St. Joseph.

"There’s a fair number of lots for sale, and that’s appealing for those looking to customize their living space,” says Sarah Jones, a Realtor who sells houses in the area. "The neighborhood has much to offer, including excellent schools, beautiful parks and a convenient location. "

Families in St. Joseph are spoiled for choice regarding quality education. Houlton Elementary School, Hudson Middle School and Hudson High School are just a stone's throw away. The schools consistently receive high grades, emphasizing excellence in academics, arts and sports. All three schools are highly rated by Niche, with Hudson High School receiving an A-plus grade. Hudson High School is known for its rigorous academic program and competitive sports teams. Houlton Elementary School is a small, close-knit school focusing on individualized instruction. Hudson Middle School is a larger school with many extracurricular activities available to students. Both Hudson Middle and Houlton Elementary schools received a B grade by Niche.

A short drive from St. Joseph, you can explore Willow River State Park's trails or spend a day on the fairways at White Eagle Golf Club. The park sits near the Wisconsin border and has many hiking trails and scenic gems. Its most popular destination is the mesmerizing cascading waterfall. The park also offers hiking, biking and picnicking. And for those who love to tee off, the White Eagle Golf Club has a pristine course and top-notch amenities.

When satisfying taste buds, a few restaurants are in the community and even more are in adjacent communities. One local favorite is The Next Stop Bar and Grill which serves diners burgers, beer and bourbon. Local bands and friendly games are also commonplace at the watering hole, which serves as a prime example of how friendly this community is on the whole. “It’s a very welcoming community,” says Jones. “There’s no such thing as a stranger.”

Throughout the year, the St. Joseph neighborhood hosts several special events, from Fourth of July parades to festive holiday markets. The St. Joseph Summer Festival features food, music and games, while the Houlton Fall Festival brings hayrides, pumpkin carving and other fall-themed activities. Community togetherness can also be seen at the St. Croix Valley Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday from June to October and features a variety of fresh produce, baked goods and other local products. In the event of a medical emergency, the community is about 10 miles north of Hudson Hospital and Clinic, right off Interstate 95. The Wisconsin Public Transit System serves the area.
