Sprawling homes in convenient location
Manchester is a small neighborhood with big homes on the outskirts of Houma. Sprawling Acadian architecture sits only about 4 miles from Downtown Houma. It is even closer to Martin Luther King Boulevard, a bustling street lined with national chains like Chili’s and Home Depot. “Everything is by that area,” says Kandy Theriot, Realtor and owner of The Realty Group of South Louisiana. “That is the place to live.” Besides big box stores, residents are near the Bayou Country Sports Park, which hosts ball games throughout the year. U.S. Route 90 is about 3 miles away, meaning commuters have a direct road to New Orleans. Manchester receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Larger homes with Acadian influences
Driveways branch off the neat streets of Manchester, going past grassy lawns dotted with mature oak and cypress trees and leading to detached garages. “The houses are bigger in Manchester, and the lots are larger,” Theriot says. “We don’t have that a lot here anymore because we don’t have a lot of land left.” The average size of a single-family residence is close to 2,500 square feet, which is above the national average. Most of the area was built after 2000, although some older properties are scattered throughout. Acadian styles fill the neighborhood. Even the larger, new traditional homes reference Acadian architecture, with wide, covered porches supported by columns and steep roofs. Homes are rarely available in the area; less than five houses sold in 2024. Prices ranged from $208,000 for a ranch style built in the 1980s to $699,000 for a new traditional model with a covered pool house. Most other prices fell between $465,000 and $510,000 for a three- to four-bedroom property. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Manchester has a relatively high risk of hurricanes and a relatively moderate risk of flooding. Flood insurance is recommended for everyone in the southern parts of the neighborhood, and many mortgage lenders require it. However, many homes near Highway 311 are not in a flood zone. “It’s farther north, so you don’t have to pay flood insurance,” Theriot says.

Highly rated high school with dual enrollment opportunities
Manchester is part of the Terrebonne Parish School District. Southdown Elementary School receives a B-minus from Niche, while Houma Junior High School has a B-plus. Terrebonne High School earns an A-minus. The high school partners with the Louis Miller Career and Technical High School to offer carpentry, welding, and culinary arts classes. About 15 miles away, Nicholls State University offers dual enrollment courses and 28 undergraduate degree programs. “A lot of people here commute if they can’t afford, or don’t want to, live in a dorm,” Theriot says. Many families send their kids to private schools like St. Francis De Sales Elementary School and Vandebilt Catholic High School.

Commuters near U.S. Route 90
Like much of Houma, Manchester is car-dependent. State Route 311, also called Highway 311, runs along the northern part of the neighborhood and connects with U.S. Route 90. “It’s close, so people who are commuting outside of Houma can get out without having to go through town or lots of red lights,” Theriot says. New Orleans is about 63 miles away, and Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is a 53-mile drive. The closest hospital is Terrebonne General Health System, about 5 miles away.
Manchester neighbors large sports complex
Manchester residents can enjoy the outdoors at Bayou Country Sports Park, next to the neighborhood. “I mean, they can just walk across the field to get there,” Theriot says. The open fields are used for soccer, flag football and races throughout the year. The softball complex hosts games, practices and tournaments for softball and baseball teams. Families can cool off at the Splash Pad from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Visitors can kayak, boat and fish at the park’s pond, which is regularly restocked. They can also play in the sand and enjoy a picnic at the beach. The Terrebonne Parish Main Library is about 4 miles away. Patrons can attend Storytime, crafting clubs and game nights.

Rougarou Fest is highly anticipated event
Houma puts on an array of events throughout the year. Bayou Country Sports Park hosts The Good Earth 4th of July Festival, where attendees can enjoy hours of live music and end the night with a sparkling fireworks show. For many residents, the highlight of the year is the Rougarou Fest. “That’s the big event that everyone looks forward to,” Theriot says. Locals are not the only ones who love this fall celebration – the Louisiana Travel Association named it the Festival of the Year in 2023. Named for the Rougarou – a creature similar to a werewolf that hunts misbehaving children – the Rougarou Fest is a weekend-long celebration with a costume contest and Folklife Village, where people can learn about the music, arts and traditions of South Louisiana. The Krewe Ga Rou Parade rides through the streets of Houma on Saturday night, with decorated boats, giant puppets and dancing ghouls.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
