Aldine residents enjoy fewer regulations
The community of Aldine is just 10 miles north of Houston, but the frenetic pace heads drastically south. Residents here enjoy a freer and slower-paced lifestyle, where leisure time can be spent joining in on pick-up soccer games at the parks, haggling at the flea markets and feasting on real-deal Mexican cuisine at local eateries. “It’s a culturally focused neighborhood. There’s a large Hispanic population, but it’s a mix,” says Jose Zavala, a Realtor with Keller Williams, who has been selling homes in the area for eight years. “The people who live there like that they don’t have a lot of regulations. It’s outside the city. It’s in Harris County, so there are less restrictions. People can and do have chickens there. And the taxes are cheaper outside of the city.”

Airline Drive serves as a shopping and dining hub
For grocery and retail shopping, there are several markets. Some are chains, such as El Rancho Supermercado on North Freeway, and some are locally run, such as the flea markets on Airline Drive. Tia Pancha and Mercado Sabadomingo flea markets provide a festive atmosphere and hundreds of vendors, hocking everything from cowboy boots to Mexican hotdogs. “The Airline Drive flea markets are a big deal. They’re open every weekend. They sell everything,” Zavala says. “For Hispanic people, it reminds them of when they were in the plazas in Mexico.”
Aldine also hosts an abundance of Mexican, Salvadorean and American comfort food restaurants. Along Airline Drive, there’s La Reyna Tortilleria, a local favorite for tamales, roasted whole chickens, and tacos with handmade flour tortillas. At Blue Ocean Smoothies, residents can grab loaded nachos and satisfy their sweet tooth with ice cream or shaved iced treats. A night out could be spent at Micheladas El Guero drinking Mexican beer cocktails with friends or playing a game of pool and singing karaoke at Dunia Bar.

Aldine is an established community
The leafy, sidewalk-lined residential streets largely feature ranch houses built from the 1950s through the ‘70s, as well as a smattering of more contemporary homes. Home seekers can expect to find roomy fenced-in lots. “It’s an established area. Most of the people have lived a big part of their life there. Their parents lived there. They grew up there,” Zavala says. “The people who live there don’t want to move. They’re happy there.”
The average home sells in the low-$200,000. A three-bedroom, two-bath could cost $175,000, while a four-bedroom, two-bath might fetch $225,000. “It’s a good market there,” Zavala says. “If a property is in good condition and it’s priced accordingly it will sell within 30 to 60 days.”
Aldine's Mercado Sabadomingo is a treasure trove of fun featuring horse rides and Ferris wheel.
