Young Houston neighborhood thriving with investment
East Aldine is a young community that was created to make the region a better place for residents and businesses alike. The Texas Legislature created the East Aldine District in 2001 to enhance the economic identity of the unincorporated area of Aldine. For the last two decades, a small volunteer council has invested heavily in the construction, energy and transportation industries, worked on hurricane and flooding recovery and created neighborhood resources like a large community center and the East Aldine Arts Council. This Arts Council has filled the area with murals and sculptures and hosts a yearly art festival. The district is also in a prime location just south of George Bush Intercontinental Airport and close to attractions like the Houston Interactive Aquarium and Animal Preserve. “It’s its own little town, a little gateway. It’s a very resourceful, vibrant, hard-working, family-orientated community,” says Monica Campos, the marketing manager for East Aldine.
East Aldine is perfectly situated between the middle of downtown and, on the south side, Spring and The Woodlands.

Houses dating back to Aldine’s first developments
Builders began developing Aldine in the 1960s and 1970s, so most of the properties in East Aldine are ranch properties and cottages from that era. While neighborhoods often do not have sidewalks, the space between homes has wide front yards, thick bushes and oak trees. Covered backyard patios laid with intricate brick or stones are a popular addition. A home in East Aldine usually ranges between $150,000 to $300,000. This is a jump from 2018, when home prices started at $100,000.

East Aldine is almost entirely made up of family homes and business headquarters, but there is still some fast-food joints, food trucks and taquerias nearby. Local Mexican chains like Alma Latina, La Reyna Tortilleria and La Real Michoacana are all clustered along Aldine Mail Route Road. The street is also home to Café La Luna, which serves specialty coffee drinks, sweet and savory crepes and “marquesitas,” a Mexican street food consisting of a crispy wafer filled with cheese, toffee, chocolate or jelly. The closest large grocery store is Food City, also on Aldine Mail Route Road. Many community churches are also centered around Aldine Mail Route Road, including Monument of Faith Church and Church of Northside.

Close-up encounters at Houston Interactive Aquarium & Animal Preserve
The east side of Aldine is flush with green space thanks to the 500-acre Keith-Wiess Park on Aldine Westfield Road. This large community park was initially designed to control hurricane-induced flooding that is still common throughout the area. “We’ve had a lot of floods over the years. We’ve been hit hard by Harvey and Ike and Tropical Storm Allison. We count on each other as neighbors to recover,” says Selinda Valez, a member of the Green Forest Civic Club. The park now includes amenities like a half-mile paved hiking and running trail, a lake with a boardwalk and pier, tennis courts and athletic fields. Along the northern side of the community, Houston Interactive Aquarium & Animal Preserve on Sam Houston Parkway offers guests of all ages the opportunity to feed and pet animals like stingrays, pythons, lemurs and rainbow lorikeets.
In 2021, East Aldine built a community center along Aldine Mail Route Road, which hosts community events like movie nights and arts festivals. There is also a sheriff’s office at the community center where residents can make crime reports. East Aldine has a CAP Crime Index Score of 6, slightly above the national average of 4 out of 10.
