An East Houston home for artists, musicians and scientists
On the right side of the University of Houston campus, Gulfgate Riverview / Pine Valley – sometimes called Gulfgate Pine Valley or just Gulfgate -- is one of the largest residential neighborhoods in East Houston. It has been home to scientists, artists and musicians for generations, and the neighborhood contains a sprawling folk art display, a world-famous recording studio and a scenic slice of the Brays Bayou Greenway that once served as NASA's headquarters. In the past, the area was known as a midcentury retail hub supported by one of Houston’s first malls. In modern times, Gulfgate has focused more on local art and its prime location near the heart of downtown.
Smithers Park is one of Gulfgate-Pinevalley's hidden gems.

The Orange Show Monument, a folk art masterpiece
The Orange Show Monument is a bright splash of color that stands out on Munger Street, an otherwise unassuming residential road. This 3,000-square-foot folk art installment was built in the mid-1990s by retired Houston postman Jeff McKissack. The maze of mismatched concrete, tile, brick and steel is dedicated to McKissack’s favorite fruit – the orange. “It’s one of the preeminent folk art displays in the country, if not the world. We’re lucky to have it here in Houston,” says Jonathan Beitler, director of communications for Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, a local art nonprofit that maintains the Monument. Next to the Orange Show Monument is Smither Park, a companion space filled with mosaics by local artists. During the Houston Art Car Parade in April, dozens of eclectically decorated cars drive down the street in front of the Orange Show Monument.

Graggs Park Complex has interstellar roots
Part of the Brays Bayou Greenway hiking and biking trail cuts through Gulfgate, and the Gragg Park Complex on Wheeler Street is a large offshoot of the greenway. The building at the center of the park now houses the Houston Parks and Recreation Department but was once the headquarters where NASA developed plans to send the first humans to space in the 1960s. Sculptures of astronauts Yuri Gagarin and John Glenn are installed in the park to celebrate this achievement. A short walk from Graggs Park is another notable spot -- SugarHill Recording Studios on Brock Street, the country's oldest recording studio. Dozens of legendary artists have worked there, including Houston native Beyonce. “SugarHill is a really cool space because it’s iconic,” says Stephen Finley, an engineer at the studio. “People come here, and they’re not intimidated by the past. They’re really welcomed by it.”

Dot Coffee Shops serves southern cooking anytime
The Gulfgate Center on Woodbridge Drive was notable for being the first air-conditioned mall in the country when it opened in 1956. The mall still offers well-known chains like H-E-B, and is surrounded by multiple community churches, including Pine Valley Bible Church on Broad Street and Iglesia de Dios el Refugio on Telephone Road.
Dot Coffee Shop, a Houston staple since 1967, is just off nearby Interstate 45. The retro-style diner is open 24/7 and has served Southern favorites like chicken fried steak and pecan pie for over 50 years. On the other side of the neighborhood, Spanky’s on Interstate 610 is known for its margaritas and homemade pizza with made-from-scratch crust.
