Suburban Neighborhood in Houston, Texas
Harris County 77008, 77092
Lazy Brook-Timbergrove is a wholesome neighborhood in Houston Heights filled with midcentury ranchers and parks. The neighborhood’s proximity to downtown and abundant greenspace has made it increasingly attractive to buyers. Houston is ribboned with a network of bayous big and small. White Oak Bayou isn’t the largest, but it is one of the most popular for its bike trail. The bayou runs straight through Lazy Brook-Timbergrove and is a big draw for home buyers.
The White Oak Bayou Greenway is used by locals for everything from early morning runs to dog walks to weekend family bike rides. Its 17 miles of trails lead straight to Minute Maid Stadium. Riding south on the White Oak Bayou Greenway from Lazy Brook-Timbergrove as the skyscrapers in Discovery Green loom ahead is a sublime experience. There are plenty of parks and restaurants in “The Heights” to stop at on the way.
Jaycee Park is especially popular with families during summertime for its splashpad. The Lorraine Cherry Nature Preserve is what locals call a “pocket wilderness” with wooded trails and a visible woodpecker population throughout its 20 acres. STEM and communications magnet school Sinclair Elementary isn’t far. Along with myriad arts and tech activities, the school hosts local makers who teach their skills to youngsters while contributing art and sculpture to the campus.
Most of the restaurants and amenities in Lazy Brook-Timbergrove exist in its northeast corner where 18th Street meets Ella Boulevard near the White Oak Bayou. Some restaurants are average chains and fast food, but residents go crazy for Hughie’s, the homegrown Vietnamese burger joint that’s as esoteric and amazing as it sounds. There’s a charming artisanal market called Brooklyn’s nearby, but residents will need to cross the bayou to buy groceries at H-E-B.
The streets are wide and often separated by grassy medians. Stone ranchers with towering willow oaks in their front yards sit behind spacious lawns. Some of these have been lovingly remodeled to preserve their midcentury character with tasteful additions of modern steel fencing and corrugated metal roofing. Other lots have been razed and rebuilt with plush new townhomes housing inset balconies and 4 floors to compensate for the general absence of basements in Houston. Flooding is a reality for homes closest to the bayou.
Lazy Brook-Timbergrove is a sunny, family-friendly neighborhood within city limits that’s close enough to access all the culture of Houston while being far enough away to retain a bit of the innocence of 1950s America.
