South Park is home to generational families
South Park was initially designed in the '50s as a suburb for veterans returning from World War II, and many of its street names still honor their service. The neighborhood experienced a long period of infrastructural neglect from the late '60s onward, but things are changing. "I do feel like the city of Houston supports us," says Edgewood Community Center recreation supervisor Alice Ferrell, who's lived in this neighborhood for 27 years. A current initiative the city is spearheading is creating safer pedestrian routes to schools for South Park's children. Though South Park is home to primarily generational families, outside interest is naturally picking up due to the neighborhood's relative affordability and central location 9 miles from downtown Houston. "They are tearing down some of the older homes and rebuilding. And they are doing a lot of remodeling," says Realtor Nesha Jackson of Home Express Realty. Throughout South Park's iterations, its community strengthens and continues to advocate for itself.

South Park's original homes are ranch-style
Just over a decade ago, the most expensive home in South Park was a '50s-era three-bedroom that had been completely renovated and listed for just under $78,000. Today, remodeled homes are more common, and a similar property might cost around $200,000. Tear-down projects and the occasional undeveloped lot make way for modern duplexes and detached homes. These are currently the most expensive properties, with entry points starting in the mid $200,000s and rising to the $400,000 to $500,000 range. South Park's original homes are ranch-style, with small garages or carports on modest lawns. Houston is prone to flooding and the last major flood to affect South Park residents was in 1994, when 20 inches of rain dropped in 24 hours.
Newer townhomes are being built in and around South Park, offering new housing opportunities.

Taking the bus to Fiesta Mart
It's fairly easy getting around without a car in South Park. "We have great public transportation on the bus line," Ferrell says. "The grocery stores are on the bus line. You can get off and head straight into the parking lot," she says. The nearest freeway is just north of the neighborhood, and residents can easily access the 610 Loop.
Residents can board the METRO buses, which lead from South Park to all areas of Houston.

Students in South Park are served by the Houston Independent School District. Older students might attend Jones High School, which has a magnet program and focuses on college readiness. "I love that there are a lot of choices and opportunities for our students. They can graduate here with an associate degree taking college courses in 10th grade," says Nancy Gutierrez, the school's office clerk. They might filter into these schools from Kelso Elementary and Attucks Middle. Some homes may also be zoned to Bastian and Alcott Elementary, and Hartman Middle and Worthing High – all nearby.

Burger Park hits the spot
It's impossible to mention South Park without Burger Park, where the menu and decor haven't changed much since the '60s, but people still can't get enough. This local secret sits on Martin Luther King Boulevard, the neighborhood's major thoroughfare. "We also have little strips with Family Dollar, some clothing stores, and it seems like there's a phone store on every corner," Ferrell says. She mentions that for bigger box chains, most locals shop at the Galleria, 12 miles northwest on Westheimer Road. And for groceries, there's a Fiesta Mart close by on Cullen Boulevard.

After school programs at Edgewood Park
There are several parks in the community, but one of the main community hubs is Edgewood Park on Bellfort Avenue. "We have an adult aerobics program and an after-school program that runs for three to six months yearly. We provide kids with snacks and meals. During the summer, we have a summer camp, and the program is free if kids meet the requirements. It's based on how much money a household makes or if they receive any assistance from the government," Ferrell says. Ferrell also shared that while crime is high in South Park, Edgewood Park feels like a haven. "We have a lot of theft, but we never have any drama up here." She says the police work closely with the community to improve the situation through neighborhood watch initiatives. The Cap Index Score here is currently 7 out of 10.

Christmas parties at Kelso Elementary School
The community-led South Park Area Civic Club nourishes bonds by spearheading local events and fundraisers, including book drives, student food donations and Christmas parties at Kelso Elementary School. The club also organizes community outreach sessions, including their "Good" — graciously overcoming obstacles daily — mentoring campaign for young girls. On a city-wide front, the Safer School Routes initiative will allocate over $2 million toward enhancing pedestrian safety surrounding schools — including adding more sidewalks, crosswalks, beacon lights and crossing signals.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

In 2008 I think that the house prices were at the very low, so there were a lot of people that started buying houses.

There is a burger restaurant in this area, its called "Burger Park". In my opinion they have one of the best burgers. I love that its cooked when ever you order it. The waiting is somewhat long, but it is all worth it at the end.
