Tanglewood is a suburb 20 minutes outside of downtown Houston that has housing prices to fit a variety of budgets. Several retail and restaurant options are nearby, including the popular Uptown, and the area has easy access to Highway 10 and Interstate 610 to quickly get to the rest of Houston. “The neighborhood isn’t super walkable, but you’re still close to tons of retail and services,” says Robert Bland, a Realtor with Compass Real Estate who’s been selling homes in Houston since 1990. “People are always out and about, running errands during the week, and spending time with family on the weekends."

Single-family homes here primarily consist of ranch styles from the late 20th century and new contemporary styles built within the past 20 years. “Tanglewood was originally restricted to one-and-a-half-story homes,” says Bland. “A lot of those houses have been torn down and the newly built homes now have larger lots.” The neighborhood has a traditional grid-structured layout with cul-de-sacs, and the homes here can include long driveways and garages. Older homes in the area have up to three bedrooms and typically sell for between $1.2 million to $1.5 million. Remodeled homes and large, contemporary new builds come with up to seven bedrooms and sell for as much as $11 million. Tanglewood also has a community of condos in the north end that typically sell for between $250,000 to $350,000.

The Houston Independent School District serves the neighborhood’s students. Kids may start at Briargrove Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, before transitioning to Tanglewood Middle School, also rated a B, which performs above the state average on test scores in algebra and reading. Students may then attend Wisdom High School, which gets a C rating from Niche.

Tanglewood is highlighted by its proximity to major retailers. The Woodway Collection shopping mall covers your daily needs with a Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, The UPS Store and a CVS pharmacy. The Shops at Tanglewood is also nearby and offers a pet store and a gym. The neighborhood is just a 10-minute drive to The Galleria in Uptown, which offers high-end shops and boutiques like Coach and Ralph Lauren. Tanglewood also has popular local restaurants like The Brisket House, a family-owned eatery that's been serving barbecue to the area since 2010. There’s also Latin Bites, an upscale restaurant that serves Peruvian fare in a colorful atmosphere.

The neighborhood has several outdoor areas to explore, including the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center just a five-minute drive east on Woodway Drive. This 155-acre green space has several miles of hiking trails through its dense forest, habitats with a variety of flora and fauna and a nature center that hosts workshops and events. Tanglewood Park is closer to home and offers a dog park, tennis courts, a baseball/softball diamond and a playground. If you’re a golfer, the Houston Country Club is right at your back door and has an 18-hole course, over a dozen tennis courts and several dining options.

If you’re looking for a community close to downtown Houston that offers its own array of popular retailers and local restaurants, Tanglewood may just be the last place you look.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
