Goldenwest is full of parks, shopping centers, and coastal convenience
At the northern end of Orange County, suburban Goldenwest blends an established midcentury neighborhood with a lively community college town. Home to Golden West College, "Goldenwest is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Huntington Beach," says Mitchell Galyean, Realtor with Seven Gables Real Estate, "with a mix of older single-family homes and newer rental apartments. It's full of community parks, popular shopping centers and some really good bars and restaurants, and conveniently set right on the 405." Named for Huntington Beach’s Goldenwest Street, here you're just 6 ½ miles from Downtown Huntington Beach and the Pacific. Between Westminster and Fountain Valley, you're 10 miles from Santa Ana and about 15 miles from Irvine.
Midcentury modern homes and various condo options
Along Goldenwest’s wide-open streets, narrow sidewalks and cul-de-sacs, you’ll commonly see midcentury modern homes — either ranch-style or two-story — that average $1.25 million; with up to four bedrooms, most have a two-car garage and a backyard patio on a roughly 6,000-square-foot lot. Yards are well manicured, tall streetlamps light your way, and large trees are rare. You’ll see your neighbors out walking their dogs or heading to local parks for a longer stroll.
In the market for a smaller home? A 1,000-square-foot condo unit from the early 1970s averages $500,000 (plus a monthly HOA of about $400); while in the Sea Aira Estates community, which includes heated pools and a clubhouse, a three-bed, two-bath mobile home from the early '80s costs about $220,000. The local Golden West College offers no on-campus housing, so you’ll also see plenty of apartment complexes, with rents starting at $2,100 a month.
Community parks with activities for all ages
At the 16-acre Murdy Park and Community Center complex, you can play tennis, basketball or softball, or watch your favorite kids on the playground or small skate park. More adventurous skaters will enjoy the heck out of the 40,000-square-foot Vans “Off the Wall” Skatepark, which spans a full city block. The leafy, dog-friendly, 11-acre Irby Park includes grassy open lawns and tree-shaded walking paths; Carr Park offers a graceful duck pond; and just west is the 18-hole, par-70 and public Meadowlark Golf Course. If pickleball’s your game, you’ll be happy to find 24 community courts at Golden West College.
Outdoor malls with shops and eateries
You’ll do your local shopping and dining in well-stocked outdoor malls like Bella Terra and Old World Village. When you’re hungry, you can tuck into wood-fired tacos and fresh-made margaritas at Solita; linger over gourmet burgers, craft beers and top-shelf whiskey at Eureka!; or enjoy a traditional curry at Issara Thai Cuisine. With dim lighting and a retro midcentury vibe, Shanghai’d Room has karaoke and happy hour seven days/nights a week, or you can catch a movie at the Cinemark multiplex. Get your grocery shopping done at Whole Foods, Costco, Sprouts and more.
Ocean View and Huntington Beach Unified schools
Many local kids attend Ocean View district schools like Circle View Elementary, a National Blue Ribbon School rated 8/10 by Great Schools; and the 6/10-rated Spring View Middle, which prides itself on a strong PTSA. Students here may continue to Huntington Beach Unified schools like the 8/10-rated Marina High (go, Vikings!), with dynamic athletic and performing arts programs.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
