A waterside community full of history
If Guyandotte’s brick-paved streets and towering trees could talk, they would have quite a bit to say. This neighborhood predates the rest of Huntington. “The Huntington area basically started in the Guyandotte area,” says Seth Crabtree, a local Realtor with Realty Advantage and a Huntington native. Guyandotte, founded in 1810, was one of the first towns in the entire region, and it was once home to a major gristmill and a port, thanks to its location by the Ohio and Guyandotte rivers. The neighborhood was annexed into the growing city of Huntington in 1911, but it retains its classic homes and popular marina.
Homes almost as deeply rooted as the neighborhood
Some houses in Guyandotte date back to the early and mid-19th century. Many more were built from the early to mid-20th century. Craftsman is the most common style, but floor plans range from about 800 square feet to well over 2,000 square feet. Once a key point for industry, the area is mostly residential today, full of quiet streets lined with sidewalks. Some brick streets remain from an earlier era. The average yard is a 10th of an acre. Price tags range from $10,000 for a fixer-upper to $120,000 for a renovated home.

Schooner’s is a draw on the water
Even without a major port, Guyandotte's waterside location is still a boon. The nearby stretch of the Ohio River is home to Schooner’s Waterfront Grille. “It’s a real local favorite attraction,” says Realtor Preston Cole of Property Professionals, who has more than 40 years of experience. “People eat right there on the water; pull up on their boats and get their orders to go.” Popular menu items include catfish and onion rings. The neighborhood also has Mountain Mama’s Kitchen, serving up fish, chicken, pork chops and more. Locals can head 2 miles north across the river to the Kroger in Proctorville, Ohio, for groceries.

Fireworks light up the sky annually
Locals can head to the Harris Riverfront Park, just west of Guyandotte in Downtown Huntington, for the annual Dawg Dazzle Fourth of July celebration. This event features multiple musical performances, including by the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and a fireworks show at the end of the night. Huntington also has a Rails & Ales Festival each August, which Crabtree says most recently drew some 5,000 people. Rails & Ales visitors can try beers and ciders from around the world, while grabbing a bite from a food truck and exploring an art market.
Tutoring is included at Guyandotte Elementary
Guyandotte Elementary offers after-school tutoring. Students at Huntington East Middle can take part in extracurricular activities including an archery group and a theater troupe. Both schools are rated C-plus by Niche. The B-rated Huntington High has academies focused on human services and STEM. Also, Marshall University educates more than 11,000 students just 2 miles west.
Neighborhood marina is a well-liked amenity
Boaters in the area can use Adam’s Landing Marina, located by Schooner's. Adam’s, in addition to having 60 slips, is known for its views of the sunset over the water. Residents can cross the Guyandotte River to reach the more than 100-acre Rotary Park, which includes a pair of disc golf courses, a couple of baseball diamonds, a playground and a series of trails.
