The Medical District sits right in the middle of the action in Huntsville

It's no mystery how Huntsville's Medical District got its name. Neighboring Huntsville Hospital and a collection of dental practices, residents of the Medical District enjoy easy access to health care facilities, as well as an array of additional nifty perks. Just a mile outside of downtown Huntsville, locals are only a short stroll away from all of the amenities found in Alabama's largest city while still enjoying a quieter suburban vibe.

Older ranch-styles and bungalows are common in the Medical District

The Medical District's tree-shaded streets primarily feature small ranch-styles and cottages alongside Craftsmans and bungalows built as early as the 1940s, though some newer properties have also taken root around the neighborhood. "There’s a push for new construction," says local Realtor Adam Stults of Amanda Howard Sotheby's International Realty, who has sold over 100 homes around the Huntsville area. "People come in to tear down older houses and build new ones." Smaller homes under 1,500 square feet tend to price between $200,000 and $400,000, but newer, larger builds with four or more bedrooms may range from $400,000 to $700,000. Home prices are higher in the Medical District compared to some of its neighboring communities, and much of this is attributed to its access to the city. "The close proximity to downtown and the hospital is a big draw to the area," Stults says.

Locals can wine at The Wine Cellar, and dine at Char

Locals are only a quick drive — or walk — from good eats. Char is a southern-style steakhouse on Bob Wallace Avenue known for its lean cuts of beef and weekly jazz performances, and Stone Age is the place to go for Korean barbecue and a futuristic dining experience. Residents can also sip on a glass of wine at The Wine Cellar, serving the Huntsville area since 2002. Whole Foods is the usual stop for fresh fruits and veggies, while additional retailers and restaurants are just a stone's throw away at The Shops at Merchants Walk or Parkway Place Mall less than a mile south of the neighborhood.

Huntsville High earns A-graded academics

Students in the Medical District are served by the Huntsville City School District. Kids can go to Blossomwood Elementary School before advancing to Huntsville Junior High School — both earning overall grades of B-plus from Niche. Teens attend the A-rated Huntsville High School in the heart of the neighborhood, offering a host of extracurricular clubs along with a competitive athletics program that has won state championships in girls volleyball and cross country.

The Medical District is only a mile from the bustling Big Spring Park

Residents don't need to travel far for outdoor recreation. Mayfair Park, just a half-mile south, is a top spot for Little Leaguers to gather for batting practice. A mile north, Big Spring Park offers leisurely strolls along the pond and numerous community events, including Battle of the Buffalo — an annual chicken wing festival drawing Huntsville locals since 2009. The park also neighbors Propst Arena, the go-to place for concerts and Havoc hockey games, as well as the Huntsville Museum of Art. Established in 1970, the museum features over 3,200 objects while aiming to bring people and art together in the heart of Huntsville.

Locals can walk, drive or get around on the Orbit bus

Given its proximity to downtown, the Medical District is walkable, though many residents prefer to drive with excellent road and highway access. Memorial Parkway runs along the neighborhood's western border, making for easy travels into the city and beyond. Locals can also get around on the Orbit bus. Route 5 passes through the Medical District, feeding directly into downtown.
