Small-town charm and farmland abound just 55 miles outside of Detroit
Life moves at a slower pace in Imlay Township, a rural community located 55 miles north of Detroit’s city center. Expansive lots, farmland and established homes make up the township’s landscape, with Imlay City being a convenient nearby hub for a small selection of amenities and restaurants. “People move here for the small-town feel,” says Alex Lengemann, a local real estate agent with Realty Volution.com. “We have lower taxes out here compared to surrounding communities, and you can get more land for your money. Folks have been moving out to the Detroit-area townships in recent years as remote work has lessened the need to commute.”
Farmhouses, country homes and vast acreages available
The average home price here is just over $300,000. If you’re looking to start from scratch, you can get a 2-acre lot for $30,000 and lots of 10 acres and beyond for $100,000 to $150,000. On the higher end of the market, you’ll find a private country home with four bedrooms, a three-car garage, a horse barn and over 40 acres of land. For less than $200,000, you could snag a three-bedroom fixer-upper on a 2-acre, wooded lot. Build dates range from the 1880s to the early 2000s, with more modern builds found closer to the Imlay City limits.
