Quiet residential neighborhood adjacent to "the Square"
McCoy is the birthplace of President Harry S. Truman, whose legacy is evident throughout Independence Square, which is adjacent to McCoy. Although Independence is just 10 miles from downtown Kansas City, it has a different vibe. Independence has held on to its small-town feel since the 1800s. Just as in those early days, people still hang out at "the Square," as locals call it. They may occasionally visit historic spots like the Truman Presidential Library and Museum and the Truman Courthouse. But on the daily, people go to the Square to work, shop, eat or have fun watching a movie or bowling. This area has returned from decades of blight and vacant buildings in the late 1990s to become a vital cultural, shopping and dining hub.
"It's a fun, very walkable little Square. There aren't many towns that still have the town square tradition," Nick Pickrell says.
Pickrell is a Realtor with a Local Agent who's been selling homes in the area for four years.
"It's a pretty good-sized little area that has a little bit of everything, with a lot of fun little places to walk around," he says.
Residents in the area like to take a walk around the downtown Independence Square.
