Most people know Independence, Missouri as the boyhood home of America’s 33rd president, Harry Truman. For people who live in Mill Creek, a subdivision of Independence, it’s simply home. “The community and the schools are what’s are most appealing about here,” says Kassie Peters, a Realtor with First Class Real Estate who sells homes in the area. “I think it offers the best bang for your buck. When you go to Lee Summit and Blue Springs, you’re paying a lot more as far as taxes and purchase price on a home. Here, you can find places like Mill Creek that cost a lot less money and are great communities.”

Just 12 miles east of Kansas City, unassuming Mill Creek bears the markings of a community that’s comfortable in its own skin. Modest homes, with just enough distance between each other, sit on sidewalk-free streets beneath well-established trees of many varieties providing more than ample shade. “There are a lot of ranch-style homes, a lot of one-and-a-half levels,” Peters says. The median price for a single-family home in Mill Creek is around $210,000, with prices ranging from around $150,000 to about $330,000.

Independence school children are enrolled in the Independence School District, which Niche rates B-minus. Students attend B-minus-rated Ott Elementary, C-rated Bingham Middle School and B-minus-rated William Chrisman High School. With a 95% graduation rate and an 18 to 1 student-teacher ratio, Niche ranks Chrisman as the 20th most diverse public high school out of 550 statewide.

If you like parks, you’re in for a treat. Mill Creek has a bunch of wide-open green spaces for the asking in and around the neighborhood. Choplin-Hood Park is the closest, with swings slides and places to roam. For a much grander experience, George Owens Nature Park is not more than a 10-minute drive south. The 80-acre park is loaded with wooded trails, rain gardens, lakes and wildlife. Or, for something in between, head north to the other end of Highway 291 and find LaBenite Park beneath the bridge on the Missouri River. It’s great for hiking. There are picnic tables as well as slides and swings for the kids.

When it’s time to feed or clothe the kids and family, Mill Creek is just a stone’s throw from places to pick up groceries or shop for retail goods. Hy-Grocery store is five minutes down the road. And if you travel five minutes more, you’ll come to Independence Center Shopping Mall to find national brand stores like Dillard’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Many locals around here like to travel just a little further when they have time on hand. “I typically go to Lee’s Summit. It’s probably a 25-minute drive from here,” Peters says.

You’ll need to hop in your car to get to your nearest not-too-far restaurant. A short drive away on Route 24, step into the A Little BBQ Joint, a car-themed restaurant serving classic barbecue. From there, you can see perhaps the most prestigious attraction around these parts, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, which attracts people from all over throughout the year.

Generally, entertainment spots aren’t exactly in arm’s reach of the subdivision. But they’re not so far either. The Main Event Entertainment Center has bowling and laser tag and is just about seven miles south. Or you can do what most people around here do. Just hop in the car and head into Kansas City to see the Chiefs play football or the Royals play baseball. Getting from here to there is straightforward. Buses will take you to most places you need to go. And with several roadways and a couple of interstate highways at hand, nothing, including the airport, is much more than a half hour away from Mill Creek.
