A serene setting across the river from busy Broad Ripple
Set between Marrott Woods Nature Preserve, the White River, and the exclusive Meridian Hills Country Club, tree-filled Arden is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Though it comes with a city address and sits directly across the river from the busy Broad Ripple neighborhood, Arden is decidedly suburban in feel. “Despite being in the middle of the city, it’s very close to Broad Ripple and feels secluded,” explains Greg Hillman of Carpenter Realtors, an agent with multiple sales in the area and a resident of Arden for 10 years.
A mix of popular mid-century housing styles and sizes
Just about 10 miles north of downtown Indianapolis, the neighborhood includes a mix of bungalows, mid-century ranch-style homes, Colonial Revivals and large estate homes. “There are no cookie-cutter homes,” Hillman says. “And it has foliage, greenery and hills, plus proximity to the river and the parks. It’s a bucolic neighborhood.” The median price for an Arden house is around $600,000. Sales of bungalows and ranch-style homes can range between $425,000 and $700,000. Two-story houses sell for between $525,000 and $1.2 million.
Park Tudor School a neighborhood draw
Residents who live west of Pennsylvania Street are zoned for Washington Township schools. Most neighborhood homes are east of Pennsylvania Street, which is zoned for Indianapolis Public Schools. But for many residents, nearby Park Tudor School is the neighborhood’s biggest appeal. “Some people live in the neighborhood just so they can have their kids walk to school at Park Tudor,” Hillman says. The private K through 12 school has an A-plus rating on Niche and is the No. 2-ranked private school in Indiana thanks in part to its 9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio.
Easy access to Marott Woods and Holliday Park
Marott Woods Nature Preserve features nearly 100 acres of greenery with a network of trails. Holliday Park includes a nature center, expansive playground and walking trails about a mile southwest of the neighborhood. The park also contains a unique display known as the Ruins, an area with statues, a brick sculpture and fountains. Founded in 1923, Meridian Hills Country Club is one of Indiana’s most venerable golf courses. A championship-level course, Meridian Hills hosted the 1956 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Vibrant Broad Ripple nightlife nearby
Though Arden is a residential neighborhood, it is surrounded by shops and dining, with Broad Ripple and Glendale right across the White River. Broad Ripple is a hotspot for locally owned restaurants and bars. There are dozens of options, including Flatwater, a canal-side restaurant with a spacious patio. Northside Social, Fire by the Monon, Broad Ripple Brewpub and Soulshine Vegan Café are among the other local favorites. Fresh Thyme Market in Broad Ripple is the closet grocery store, and the Glendale Town Center mall is 3 miles east of the neighborhood. The weekly Broad Ripple Farmers Market is another source for local produce.
Public transit available, but most drive
Though there is a connection to the IndyGo Red Line in the neighborhood, most residents choose to drive. “It’s very lightly used because it’s such an easy city to drive in,” Hillman says, “and parking is not much of an issue.” Because busy thoroughfares like North College Avenue and North Meridian Street bookend the neighborhood streets, there’s little need for traffic to cut through the community, keeping the streets quiet enough to walk along despite the lack of a sidewalk.
Broad Ripple art events and Duck Race are popular
The Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple offers classes in clay, drawing and painting, allowing Arden residents to hone their creative skills and meet other beginner and seasoned artists in the community. The Broad Ripple Art Walk, held on a Saturday in spring and fall, is a self-guided tour of local businesses displaying work from local and national artists. The Broad Ripple Duck Race and 5K, held the first Saturday in June, is a family-friendly event that features thousands of rubber ducks “racing” down the Central Canal.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
