A neighborhood that reimagined its identity

International Marketplace is a product of Indianapolis innovation. Formerly known as Lafayette Square, the neighborhood rose to prominence with the development of Lafayette Square Mall in the 1960s. But by the early 2000s, the mall was dying, and neighborhood property values were declining. The mall’s reinvention into a center of commerce representing more than 100 world cultures has transformed the neighborhood’s identity. “If you drive through International Marketplace, it doesn't look like much,” says Mary Clark, executive director of the International Marketplace Coalition. “But if you get out of your car and go into the businesses and interact with the community, it’s like traveling the world without leaving Indianapolis.”

A world of shopping and dining options gives International Marketplace its flavor

The transition from Lafayette Square to International Marketplace began organically. Over the years, waves of migrants came from around the world, opening mom-and-pop shops and turning the area into a global melting pot. Today, more than 100 languages are spoken in this 2.5-square-mile area. The amalgam of cultures fosters a richly diverse community, wealth of commerce and extensive dining options — more than 120 global restaurants and 40 grocery stores in all. “Whatever you want, it’s in this area,” Clark says. “On one block, you can experience Ethiopian, Mexican and Greek, and down the street, you might get some Nigerian, Chinese, or Indian.” In addition, Aldi, Meijer and Walmart Supercenter are in the neighborhood.

Indy's Global Village a neighborhood attraction

Opened in 2021, Indy’s Global Village is a 46,000-square foot museum and welcome center representing the city's many cultures. “We needed to create a place that celebrates everybody,” Clark says. “And now we have a museum and retail hub representing over 160 countries.” Global Village hosts the neighborhood’s signature event, Taste the Difference Festival, with music, performances and food from a variety of cultures. “The festival and community help others realize that we are different, but we have more in common than our differences,” Clark says.
